I have an 03 S/C frontier. I have a bad Knock Sensor (code reading) and installed a boost gauge to track my performance problem. The night of the install I took it for a test ride and it was only pulling 3psi (normal boost with bad Knock Sensor). But today at lunch it was pulling the normal 7 to 9psi. My question is; is this a normal symptom with a bad knock sensor? Are they Intermittent like that when there bad? I wondering if it's something else. I have all the symptoms: No power, Terrible MPG(even more terrible than they normally are) and Knock sensor code comes up on scanner. Help.
Yes. It's definitely either the Knock Sensor or something else turning on and off. It is very sporadic. one minute 9 pound of boost, next stop and start up 3 pounds of boost. sometimes no boost for days and sometimes good boost for days. The low octane gas would run the same until the tank was empty? I cleared the knock sensor code ten times and it comes right back up after a quick test drive.
there is a mod for the knock sensor.. its a common problem with our trucks.. search KNOCK SENSOR.. I think you will find what you need.. or there are knock sensors on ebay for like $45.. good luck

DO NOT do the bypass mod. It is not recommened on the SC trucks.
Just replace your knock Sensor and go from there. It may have something to do with the temperature outside keeping the knocking down which lets you have boost while other times it is hot and you get knocking quick.
You are boosting up to 7-9psi depending on your pulley. That is overstressing the engine. Then you add knock on top of that and you have a recipe for disaster.
Kinda like firing on only 5 cylinders and not 6 and just cutting off the fuel supply to that cylinder. Its a band-aid, not a solutiion.
If you want your truck to last, fix it the correct way and not just apply the band-aid.
hmm seems like everyones knock sensor is taking a ****
