So forgive me if this question has already been asked and I'm re-asking it, but I've searched high and low on this site and found nothing about this yet. My distributor (pretty sure its that) is making a terrible rattleing noise at cold start, first start after sitting, cold idle, and warm idle. The only time it doesnt rattle is when its being rev'd up, but you notice it as soon as you get off the gas. It sounds like valves slaping pistons (but its not that, checked there first) It was replaced 30,000 to 40,000 km's ago (18 to 25,xxxmi for our southern neighbours) and prior to that it was the OE one and had roughly 85 to 90,000km. Nissan said they had heard it before and there was no way to fix it, that seems a little odd since a noise and vibration this loud has set off the KS in the pending DTC code section of the scan tool. My only other thought is the truck has a K&N CAI and that could possibly be letting extra air into the intake manifold and allowing a bit of a baffle noise (like extra air blwoing around) but this seems a little far fetched and unrealistic, though stranger things have happened. Anyway I'm all out of ideas and not too keen on throwing another distributor at it, and would appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance for your help!

Well its a high rotation rattle/vibration in the engine, sounds near dead center when looking back towards the windsheild, with a stethoscope placed on the distributor you can hear it and when you put your finger down on the top of the distributor you can feel it and how it varies when you increase or decrease throttle gradually. It goes away shortly after 1000rpm or so. If it isnt that im quite stupped. I can try and get a sound file or something. I know how impossible it is to diagnose a sound with out being able to hear it and by going of someones discription. Appreciate the help!

The KA24's for certain have a common marbles/gravel in a can sound that comes from the timing chain slapping on the cover.
The KA I run occasionally has it on a cold (26 celcius) day and a KL-DE Ford Probe that lost hydraulic pressure in the belt tensioner which allowed the belt to slap on the plastic cover at low rpm both have similar noises.
I don't see how a distributor can be making so much racket and the engine having no other problems other than the noise.
How is it for power and idle consistency? Compression test ever done?
When you first changed the distributor did it help initially?
Even starting your vehicle on a warm day is cold for then engine. 30 Celsius is pretty chilly compared to the 90 Celsius they operate at.
Sorry its the VG33E, not the SC one. I have no lack of power or idle speeds. had a few o2 codes but they were just new sensors. havent compression tested it yet, didnt think that would be an issue. The previous owner changed the distributor before I purchased it. I didnt notice it as much at first but its gotten worse over time, its leveled off but sounds awfule.

The belt get's old and stretches causing it to slap against the sides. I have 76,000 miles on my truck and since it was 10ys old and starting to get cold I decided to replace it this year. A local shop did everything to it and said it was very loose. Even showed me where it was slapping/running along the sides.
I have been chasing down the distributor noise (because that is where I thought it was coming from). Bought an ear scope to pin point the rattle. I even replaced the dist about 15,000 miles ago.
When I got the truck back it sounds like FREAKIN new. There is absolutely zero rattles, knocks, etc. Cold weather start up was the worse. The only thing that I still can hear is the lifters ticking every so slightly until they get lubed.
I now love this truck cause it doesn't sound like a diesel in the morning and it doesn't sound like marbles can.
I'm not saying 100% this is your problem but if you are 100,000 miles and have not changed the belt I would consider it.

Previous owner said he did the timing belt at 88,000 and I got the truck at 92,000. Its possible he never got it done. I know its a pircy repair to do, so maybe he skipped out on it. I guess ill put a belt in it. or at least check to see how tight it is, and by that point I may as well put a blet on while I have it all apart haha.

I think Joe got it. If the timing belt was done the tension was set wrong you should check it out. Mine started making noise at 95000 had the belt done at 99000 and no more noise, it's at 181000 now still doing well.
