I would say run the E85 in your 2000 and if it dies then burn it

DONT run E85

its very harmful to engines.. even the ones that are sort of designed for it

itll cause you to have detonation

on newer cars, the computer senses the E85 by way of an out of control idle and adjust the fuel map and timing to compensate for the loss in octane

your truck doesnt have this feature... unless it has the E85 stamp.. dont run it

also to, that corn garbage clogs injectors and plays hell with cats... by the way, anybody notice how it stays exactly 1 dollar less than gas.. yet theres no rarity for corn hahahahaahahahaha

Alcohol-based fuels have a much higher octane compared to gasoline; this is one reason why it is used in racing engines. However alcohol has lower energy content, so the fuel/air ratio must be higher.

Alcohol will attack some rubber, so different seals & hoses must be used.

i dont really like ethanol with the idea that using just straight up corn is hiking up the prices of produce and it takes 2 barrels of oil to make one barrel of ethanol...

but that aside, E85 does burn pretty rough and vehicles rated to run E85 are also rated lower gas mileage figures with that fuel over conventional fuel. Your vehicle wasn't meant to use it, so save yourself the time and money and dont use it.

I see no point in continuing to make E85 unless theres a more efficient way to make it without using oil and run more efficiently in cars.

I have a truck. It gets me from A to B. Why I spend so much money changing it, I will never know. Is there a cure for this disease? I have no idea what I would be using all my money for if there was a cure.

E85 is a waste of time and good American resources. If it were not for governmental support, ethanol as a fuel would die. Our political leaders would rather curry favor with corn producing States rather than solve the energy problem the correct way.

It's not "Pork Fat Rules!", it's "Pork Barrel Rules!"

Is the 25% loss in MPG worth the 25% decrease in price? This is the general percentage. It is true that it is cheaper, but what is the cost per gallon? When you convert it all out, it is usually cheaper to run regular then E85.

I'm really surprised at how many people here seem to really dislike ethanol.

I wish I had purchased a truck that was rated for E85 because I would be using it now if I could. I know I'd get less MPG and I would guess that the lower price of E85 would not make up the difference in lowered MPG, BUT I WOULD BE PROVIDING REVENUE TO A COMPETITOR TO THE OIL COMPANIES. That alone makes ethanol worthwhile to me.

I've heard the argument that it causes the cost of corn, wheat, poultry, beef, etc. to rise, but with diesel at close to $5/gal and everything being transported by truck at some point or another, the cost of EVERYTHING is rising due to increase in oil prices.

Right now, using corn only, my understanding is that you get about 1.3 gal of ethanol from 1 gal of petroleum product. Not a very impressive ratio, but other sources (switch grass, algae, etc.) should yield much higher ratios IF they can ever get the processes figured out.

If I had more years of commuting ahead of me than I do and/or a longer commute, I'd probably buy a FFV or a diesel I could run as a grease car (for as long as the grease is free).

Back to the point though, yeah, if your not rated for E85, your computer will not be able to deal with it. E85 vehicles have two "routines" in their computers, from what I understand; one to deal with gasoline parameters, the other to deal with ethanol. So, about the only way you'd be able to "convert" to E85 is to replace all of the fuel system and engine related seals, hoses, etc. with something that won't be "eaten" by the ethanol AND to reprogram your computer.

actually yes, alcohol is used in drag cars, but the E85 produced for economic consumption has a very low octane rating and a very wide varying one at that
