If the stud is striped, the wiper linkage would have to be replace.

I had this happen to me not to long ago on the way home in the rain. Just do what I did and lean to the passanger side. It turned out to be that the nut was loose on the wiper

Been there done that! In a 92 passat and I was crossing a pass in the fog and heavy rain...Pitch black out. Sucked!!! Had to finally fix it with my leatherman!!!

If the linkage needs replacing, it's not a big deal. Just be sure to take care when loosening the bolt that attaches the motor's bell crank to the linkage, as it's 'clocked' to shut off the wipers at the bottom of each stroke. If you're lucky, you'll be able to pluck out the old linkage and replace it without having to mess with anything else.

I screwed this up on my old car and the wiper blades shut off an inch above where they should.
