Cylinder 1 Misfire

Hey all, a friend of mine with an '02 four cylinder is getting a CEL for #1 misfire. The truck runs rough at idle but smooth at higher RPMs. Everything that has helped others with a misfire problem has already been attempted including:

-replaced spark plugs and wires
-replaced distributor cap and rotor
-replaced fuel filter and pump

The plug is sparking properly. I have suggested using seafoam to clean out the intake via the brake booster line and taking it to the dealer to see if it was affected by the fuel sending unit recall. His idea is the CEL is leading us on a wild goose chase. There may also be a possibility of a cracked intake manifold.

Any other ideas?

Have you checked to make sure the injectors are not clogged?

Haven't taken them out or anything but they all sound the same... all ticking away like it's their job.

They may be clicking but that doesn't mean they are flowing what is required. I had a similar issue on a Kia 4banger that I posted about on here and the fix was replacing one injector. I ended up taking off the entire rail and found that it was caked with crud. Used brake cleaner, Carb/Injector cleaner and then finally a metal stick (hanger) to chip out the crud and then re-installed with the new injector in place of the fubared looking on and all was well. It performed great for the next week or so until it was traded in on a new Mazda6 v6.

The manual says the impedance of the injectors should be between 10 and 14 ohms but all of them on the truck (including #1) are at 9.6 ohms. We will go ahead and pull the injector out and see what's going on.

Just make sure you releave the fuel pressure before taking the injector off or else you will be in for a surprise.

Distributer or wiring harness?
But since it is only cyl 1 I would agree with others here and check for a clogged injector.
Also could be mechanical problems with #1 like valve leakage.

The truck was at a mechanic for a while, after some tinkering he cleaned the EGR valve and that seems to have eliminated the problem. I guess the CEL was not entirely accurate.
