I can check/set the timing on a 2002 VG33 using a standard inductive timing light, correct? Don't need any weird tool right?

Yeah all you need is a regular timing light

I painted the mark white when I timed the distributor on my daughter's '98 Pathfinder with that engine (I had replaced the distributor for her). Regular timing light, about 30 years old.

Pickoff?
Do you use the number 1 spark plug wire for the inductive pickoff for the timing light?

Yes and make sure the arrow on the pickup clamp is facing the plug if yours has an arrow
