Carputer :)

Well this has been on my project list since i purchased my truck last june and its finally completed. I've installed a computer into my truck. This gives me the ability to control GPS, DVD's, Music, Radio and even Sirus or XM sat radio all from the comfort of my seat via my 7" touch screen. I've included some pics give me your opinions please

That is awesome, how bout a little write up?
What GUI, and what OS?
Where did you mount the hardware?
What was the easiest/hardest part?
What else do you hope to get out of it?

Well thats the thing there is still around 4" between the screen and HVAC controls i couldn't help it i wanted to install it so it could be removed if anything ever happened. It also makes it easy for me to take the screeen out if i'm parking in a bad neighborhood of philadelphia or something. No Screen No reason to break into my truck atleast i hope. I'll be doing a write-up tonight when i get home. But the O/S is windows XP, System is a NC6000 by compaq, mounted in a docking station for easy removal. Everything right now is behind the rear seat. I'll do more pictures tonight with the write-up.

Interesting! Is it easy to move / remove when you want to turn the air on? It's too bad they didn't put the OEM radio there cause I'm going to do a 7" LCD and would love it if it were a little bit higher

actually its very easy to get at the A/C controls the way i have it, its far enough from the dash board so that you can still access hvac with out any major issues. I could have installed the screen into where the double din radio slot is but that would have made it a nightmare to see and to go through the different apps installed on the system. As for storage its got a 60gb 5400 rpm hard drive in the laptop so i partitioned it 10 for the O/S (C and the rest for D: for data,mp3's, etc. I've basically turned my entire 50 cd collection into mp3's on the D: drive and its only taking 6 gigs.

As for cost i payed $190 for the lcd on ebay, i had the laptop and docking station i was given by my work. And well i already had my head unit with RCA input so that the audio could play through my speakers. Only other parts i picked up was a Bluetooth GPS Receiver for navagation only payed $60 for that shipped. And varios wires to extend the monitor to the back seat.

For more info on this and basically where i learned whats right and wrong check out http://www.mp3car.com basically its the best resource for installing a carputer/truckputer!

I was thinking of getting Clearwire so I could have mobile internet. I have no idea if there antenna-modem unit would work in the cab. I assume it would since cellphones do. It would be nice to check the traffic up ahead.
