the vg30de would be a downsize in our engines, even if you bored it out, you couldn't get it to 3.3L without seriously compromising the block.

It has more horsepower and torque so I fail to see your argument. As well it gets better mileage.

and it will be cammed completely wrong for a truck. It has less displacement so its power is all going to be higher. and how the hell will it get better gas mileage?

The cams could be changed and it has vvt as well as true full dual air intakes with two throttle body's thats why it makes more power and gets better millage. But as someone has already posted it won't fit between the shock towers so its a mute point at best.

...and your going to have to rev it higher to move a heavy truck, which will weigh the same regardless of what engine it has in it, and it will get about the same fuel economy.

and yes, I know the specs of the VG30DE, we had a VG30DETT once upon a time....*sigh*

Going EFI to vvt alone would make better mileage but also having the dual air intake and much better flowing heads would do wonders. I'm sure even cammed and having the vvt points set more for torque it would have more low end grunt but It's just too bad the head wont fit. I too pine for the classic design that was the 300zx TT. But I don't want to hijack this thread :P

the vg30de was designed to haul around a lightweight sports car and for top end power for high speed, nissan designed the vg30e and vg33e for the hardbody and frontier trucks to have the low end grunt to be able to haul or tow things, thats why these trucks suck at top end due to the engine was designed for low end tq. couldn't you just regrind a set of vg33 cams? im assuming the vg30e cams would work but i would double check to see if they would, that would suck if you got them nice and reground and them not fit.

the vg30e cams will work, and I'll probably get those since I"m sure they are more numerous and they are more aggressive.

BTW does anyone know of a way I could get 3.3 liter heads to fit a 3.8 L bore? I don't think it would work and I'd have to get custom heads. I hear they are expensive, but does anyone know where in the ballpark they would cost?

If you have enough room in the block, you will have the room in the heads. You WILL need a headgasket to fit the block though.. That also depends on the if the GUY you spoke to was measuring how much of the sleeve that was left around the cylinder or if he was measuring the block around the sleeve. Only way to truly know is find a block and use a micrometer to get a better idea.. I wouldn't take somebody's word on this...
