3.8l?

So I was on the VGpowered forum and a guy says someone he knew on another forum said that you could bore out the vg33 to 3.8 liter safely. He said he trusted the guy a lot and believed it was possible.

What do you guys know? I was planning to do the 3.4 liter build, but if 3.8 liter is possible, that would be hard to pass up.

btw the DOHC swap is nearly impossible, it would be very expensive with all the machining and finding room for the heads.

Just remember if you bore it out, your cylinder side walls are going to be thinner. If you put too much power in, they will crack and fail resulting in engine failure. You really have to look at the block and check the cylinder side walls and see how much material is really there.

Good Luck. I think all the research that you are doing is defiently going to pay off in the end with a great engine and a nice and easy install.

i don't know about that. i wouldn't mod these engines more than bolt-ons and cams. not worth it in my opinion. it is what it is.

this guy said the guy checked and said there was plenty of room for it. Of course I'd like to actually see some pics or proof, but I believe it.

And 300 NA hp isn't worth it? A lot of people know the vg33 can handle way over 300.

if these engines had a little mor compression they wouldn't be that bad, but the low comporession and the 2 cats on the exhaust is what kills these things, i think a 300 hp N/A vg33 would be badass.

you can get high compression pistons to make up for it, the Q45 pistons would raise compression to 9.6ish which is very good. You wouldn't need any boost with that compression, although you could use some it wouldn't be worth it because your CR would only go up slightly and the cost to put boost in would be a lot.

yeah no need for boost, maybe a little shot of nitrous, these little engines have potential, i'd love to hear a nice set of cams on these engines.

well if you can help me find some VG30E cams then your wish may be granted.

I found where the guy said vg33 can be bored to 3.8L.

He is a machinist and had a vg30 and vg33 block laying around and did some tests. He said you could bore vg33 to 3.8 but you would have only 1/8 inch or so left in the wall, I'm not sure how safe that would be.

I'd prefer to do 3.8 than the 3.4 build, but I would have to find the high compression pistons, and find a way for the vg30 rods to fit, I know the connecting rods will fit the Q45 pistons. I could have some custom pistons made to fit. Also another problem is getting custom heads to fit the 3.8.

What about doing a full vg30de swap(cheap low milage on ebay) then getting cams more tuned for torque. You say theres not enough room for the heads, is that just the hood or shock towers. If its just the hood a custom hood would be much cheaper then new pistons and the bore.
