3-1/2 quarts sure doesn't seem like much

for that big sump... but checked it twice after I changed it (as is my normal practice) and she's right at the top mark on the dipstick.

Recently switched to Purolator PureONE filters, was using the Nissan OEMs.

The drain plug appears to have a yellow-ish rubber gasket material, so I left it instead of using a copper crush washer.

It's saving you money on oil. I have a Lexus 3.0L inline 6 that uses nearly 6qts!

Has anyone cut an access hole and installed an access door in the bottom panel so it doesn't have to be removed for a filter change, as on the 2nd-gens?

I have not.

By means of cross reference maybe a larger oil filter could be used

No, I am happy with the filter. Fortunately all 3 Nissans use the same one, makes life easier.

Just mentioning that when I climbed under the truck to do the oil change, I saw a nice big oil pan and sump, which just appears to hold a lot more than 3-1/2 quarts. That's all. Just surprised at the listed volume.

My 2011 4.0 takes about 5.5 quarts of oil with a filter change.
