1st Gen Roof Rack Visor Thingy...

Ok...

First let me say I like my roof rack.. So removing it isn't an option...

But..... It seems that the visor part on the front of the roof rack seems to decrease my MPG pretty bad... I had taken it off this summer cause i have the sunroof, and its nice to be able to see out the sunroof in the summer... But the other day, i decided i missed it, so i put it back on.. And I typically show about 60 miles on the odo at 3/4 tank mark, and get the gas light about 225-240 ish... (thats not accurate miles, cause of the larger tires, but works for comparison reasons)...

Well with my Revo's on... same tires... same lift... I put it back on, and on my way to buffalo to meet the guy with the tires and rims i bought, i noticed i was only showing 50 miles at that 3/4 tank mark.. and stopped for gas on the way back and was 1/2 tank and only reading 100 miles... so down from the usual... I was on cruise control and all....

So anyway... My question is for those with 1st gen roof racks... have you removed this thing before? Do you notice a differance? I LOVE the look of it even better now when i have the bigger tires on... cause it doesn't look quite as tall and narrow of a truck... But whats your input on his???

Taking it on and off is easy... just four screws.... I think i may only use it when i'm going to a meet or something, where my gas milage is gonna suck anyway, and i won't be driving fast enough for the aerodinamics to matter...

Here are pics with and without it...

I'd just as soon not have the roof rack, either, Josh, but it came with the truck when I bought it and I don't want to have to bondo and paint all the holes it would leave if I took it off.

I haven't taken the visor off, but I've thought about it because when I hit a crosswind it starts rattling on the roof. If I can get even a little better gas mileage without it, I'll take it off and leave it off.

I took mine off for less than a week, so I can't comment on the gas mileage savings, but the wind noise with it off was horrendous. That alone made me put the visor back on. Just my .02

I took the visor off for the last week. The rubber part came off going down the interstate last Sunday. I did go back and get it and then I reattached is with some zip-ties so it will not come off again. Now for that one week my gas mileage did not change much for me to say I should leave it off.

Check this link out to the Thor Mod. Replaces part of the roof rack air dam with some clear material so you can get the sun to shine through to the sun roof.

On another note, you must be awfully hard on the skinny pedal, Josh. I am just above the 3/4 mark and am at 94 miles (my gas light doesn't come on until 300 miles). This is with 60% highway at 75+ and 40% city driving. Of course, I don't have the S/C, but unless you are driving it hard, it shouldn't cause that much of a difference in mileage [I am running 265/75R16s (31.6") on my truck). In other words, if you want to improve gas mileage, tread lightly on the skinny pedal.

I actually like the front air deflector, I added a THULE one that I had from a previous ski rack to my 06 Nissan rack. I happen to like the look, but it is a PIA when hauling ladders or 2x4's etc. because it sits higher than the Nissan rack cross bars.

I think the S/C is where the milage differance is... I've read in other posts/forums the differance in gas milage on the S/C compared to the non- S/C is increadable...

About the best I've seen people with the S/C getting is about 17MPG... And with the tire differance, I'm actually traveling an extra 12 miles or so per 100 miles i show, so on that 240 miles, i'm really going 270... I'm really not that hard on the truck... But i do some off roading... If i where to go through a full tank of gas without going off road, without using 4WD, and without my bug deflector (before 32" tire) I was getting to about 285-300 miles before needing gas...

GETTING GAS SUCKS... And the S/C on premium...

I noticed in a thread a while back you took yours off Josh and figured you did it cause of your sunroof. I've never done it and probably never will as I like the look of it. I'd be surprised though that it makes that much difference in gas mileage though. I can see why it would impact it negatively, but never thought it would factor that much given our truck isn't the most aerodynamic beast ever built.

I’m thinking your SC impacts you at least 1 – 2gpm definitely, but look at it this way, you’d beat me in a race

On a semi related note, I love the roof rack for functionality and looks

Well the original purpose for taking it off was because i have the sunroof, and its pretty much worthless with that thing on... I do like the visor thingy though...
