Maybe we just took it for granted that he would never come off second best.
Another sad point is that the rest of the world heard about this tragedy before his own wife and children who were treking in Tasmania.
Steve has now left a huge hole in his chosen field that will be hard to fill. I totally admire the man for who he was and what he has achieved, not to mention the huge amount of help he has offered and delivered along the way.
My heart sank with every other person on this planet when I heard the news. Thankyou Steve Irwin for what you have given to us.
Very well said Tommo.
The first i new about it was when i read Peters thread yesterday i was still in shock when i posted my note.
He transformed what was just a 2nd rate reptile farm into a top class zoo.
Ive been there a few times through the years and it doubles in size every time i go . It is well worth the visit.
The guys a legend every cent he made he put back into the zoo and research.

And to die from a stingray is just unbelievable the amount of times ive brushed by one or nearly stood on one while fishing in the creeks,$hit i must of caught hundreds of the bloody things. I know they're dangerous but i wouldnt think they would kill someone.

I heard about this on last evenings news, and was shocked! I guess what got me was the irony of how it happened! After messing with the most dangerous critters on earth, vemonous snakes, crocidiles, etc, he dies swimming with a stingray, a relatively docile, non-aggressive creature!

I was also intrigued by comments by close friends who stated his energy level never faded, I commented to my wife that his wife must have had to sedate him at night to get him to sleep! I was also astonished to learn that every cent he made went back into animal conservation, research, and protection! Truely an individual who puts the betterment of our environment before himself, is a hero in my book! He will be missed!

I was very saddened by the news, his enthusiasm to teach about animals was captivating and truely unique. Steve had a special gift to be able to engage his audience and hold their attention. He was always very enjoyable to watch and listen to as he handled various animals and taught us about them. A real conservationist and of course as much as we could know him, he seemed like a very decent, down to earth bloody good bloke !

He will be greatly missed

Steve will be missed, but at least he died doing something he loved. Don't we wish we all could go that way?
By the same token, I understand a lot of Red's comments, especially about the coverage the news media gives entertainers. I don't apply this to Steve, because he was much more than just an entertainer, but when I turn on the morning news and the headline is about the Hilton slut getting a DUI, that's just too much.
RIP, Steve.

I've watched the Croc Hunter for years. It was a dream of mine to be able to go see him in Australia. Now it won't happen and it saddens me. He will be missed. Truly. I pray that he knew Jesus and was saved, so that one day I WILL get to see him...

Duuuuude remember that FedEx commercial he was in a couple years ago where he got bit by a black mamba and "No problem mates we'll just have them FedEx the anti-venom over and wait... what's that? They didn't use FedEx???" and he just keels over? Hahaha. That guy knew he flirted with death all the time and had a sense of humor about it.

The Crock and then the Brock

Steve Irwin and then Peter Brock in the same week. What the F***?
Two Aussie legends gone in the same week, both went doing what they loved. Both will be missed.
For our USA friends Peter Brock was a racing car driver and king of the mountain Australias most famous car race.
