I don't want this to become a flame war, but by your logic no one should shed a tear when a police office, fire fighter, paramedic, or member of the armed services dies.

The fact that someone is willing to do a job that has a high likelihood to injure or kill them means they deserve a fair chance to earn your respect. Sure Steve was an eccentric individual but did good work.

I agree with Red, but the thread should continue with those who want to express thanks for Steve Irwin.

I admired his approach but could never do that myself. He was entertaining to say the least. RIP Mr. Irwin. My condolences to his family.

It is an absolute freak incident that took Steve. He has been one of the great Australian embassadors and has performed work which has both enabled us to better understand these animals and also help preserve these species through awareness and sanctuaries. I am really sad I did not take the time to visit the Australian Zoo when he was still with us. As a lot of people are saying, he was larger than life and indestructable. Maybe we just took it for granted that he would never come off second best.
Another sad point is that the rest of the world heard about this tragedy before his own wife and children who were treking in Tasmania.
Steve has now left a huge hole in his chosen field that will be hard to fill. I totally admire the man for who he was and what he has achieved, not to mention the huge amount of help he has offered and delivered along the way.
My heart sank with every other person on this planet when I heard the news. Thankyou Steve Irwin for what you have given to us.

What a loss. I truly admired that man. He was definitely over the top at times, but I will echo what others have said about his contributions to research and conservation. Not only will he be missed but men of his kind are not easily replaced.

Wow, thanks for insulting our intelligence by stating the obvious. People in Military/Public service are far superior than anybody else and are beyond compare is what I'm getting from that post. It looks to me like you were pushing for this type of confrontation.

I'm really getting tired of people pushing their politics, religion, and morality on this board. I know this is the Off Topic section, but lighten up for crying out loud.

I respect what you do, but a job does not define who a person is. Keep up the good work! I can tell you are very passionate about what you do and that's top class in my book.

I concur with the above statement; lets not throw politics into Mr Irwins passing; its a sad day for those who knew and loved him -- as im sure is the
same as those who knows and loves anybody else that passes away.
I just feel bad for his family and friends.

I was saddened by seeing the news this morning surrounding Steve's death. It is kind of unbelieveable. He was so enthusiastic about what he did that it drew you in. He was an amazing individual and did alot of great things to teach people about wildlife and to help save and preserve wildlife. Everyone out there that is not a murderer, rapist, terrorist etc. deserves peoples respect. Just because someone was not in the armed forces, a fireman, policeman, emt or whatever does not mean they don't deserve just as much respect. This honestly has nothing to do with other peoples jobs or what makes someone a hero. This was simply about a publically known animal enthusiast who had a horrific and rare tragic ending. To say he f'd with animals is an insult. The respect you give is the respect you'll receive. RIP steve
