Continental tyres

The standard tyres on my navara are wearing really quickly on the mountain roads down this way. What sort of wear rates are others getting? I have about 11k on mine now and think I will be lucky to get 25k. Looks like I will be getting better tyres sooner than I thought.

Hi ozsnow
yep im on 14000 kms and i reckon the same .......damn cheap tyres
Ill probably replace them with A/T Bridgstone d964's (better start saving)
Dont want M/T too noisy and $hit on highway and sand......and there is not much mud here anyway.

Have you sorted your suspension out yet.

I would dearly like to do a treck down in your neck of the woods........we have friends who go down there every other christmas might join them one year.

Will probably go with Cooper STs. Pretty long lasting, good on the dirt and rocks and reasonable in the snow.

I travel from Jindabyne to Perisher each day (approx 80 k return) and the road climbs nearly 800 metres with a heap of corners. The weight and power of the navara all conspire to chew tyres.

Mind you I only get about 7000 ks out of tyres on my sports bike so the ute is not to bad.

with the suspension I'll probably wait now till there are some front shocks available - ARB told me mid October and I am on their waiting list. Now that the ski season is over I get a bit of time to get things done.

Have talked to all the other after market suspension guys and there seems to nothing happening too soon. I get the feeling that there must be a lot of guys out there with spacers/longer springs that are having the same troubles that you are with topping out.

What profile tyre are you going to opt for 70,75or 80's???
i'm thinking 75, 70's is looking a bit small with the lift....but dont want to go too high.

ARB have been telling me next month since i first asked them in march........dont know what the hold up is ......... EFS and OME source there shocks from the same place (over sea's).
Do miss the soft ride i had .....but handling is much better.

Agree with you on the MT issue but I want to go with something on the 'agressive' end of the AT scale. Like all dual cabs the off road ability is a bit limited so at least the tyres will help a bit with out too much of a sacrifice on the road.

Will probably go for 265/75x16 in order to gain a bit more height. Will change the speedo about 5% but I have checked it with a GPS and it is about 2% out the other way so net change will be marginal.

You should try and get down this way sometime - plenty of good 4wdriving (and biking and fishing etc)

Will try to get a photos to post

Cheers

Does it get crowded at christmas school break down there?
We usually stay at home over christmas, because every where near the coast is packed out and expensive.

Not too busy. Worst time is between xmas and New year (the usual shutdown period) and then is OK. The town is set up for winter crowds so there is plenty of accommodation. If it is a caravan park tent site or van site you want then you need to book early.

get a fair few from Canberra and also from Victoria. Early January the lake gets a bit busy with ski boats as I believe the Australian titles are booked for Jindabyne again. Was OK last summer seemed to stir the trout up as long as you got out early before the skiers

Hey Ozsnow,
I've got 35K on my hoops and they're about half worn so no complaints. My truck weighs a constant 2800kg and I tow a large trailer quite a bit, also a boat sometimes.
I'll probably go the Coopers too when these hoops wear out!
I know what you mean about the bike, I get about 5000k's on the rear and 8000k's on the fronts using Mich Pilot Powers.
Will be down your way over Xmas. Wifes relos at Wodonga then family in Melbourne.

We have been looking for a while on here. Look up:
Ironman
OME (ARB)
Dobinsons Springs
EFS
King Coils
The last 2 have stuff now. The others are close (have been close for 6 months!!!!)
Dobinsons had a shipment and sold out immediately
ARB is too dear!

Hi Tommo,

The main suspension problem seems to obtaining a replacement (AKA slightly longer) front shock. Replacement coils, leafs springs and rear shocks are easy and relatively cheap. I don't want to end up like Navara au with shocks that are topping out.

I am sure that it is the Kosiuszko rd that kills tyres. I have seen the standard tyres on Subarus be dead in 18ks and then replacement tyres last 50k (with no change to alignment). The only easy highway milage my truck has had to date is one trip to Cooma!
Like your choice in Pilot Powers - I have them on my bike.

Cheers

I've done 20k on mine and they look less than half worn. I'm pretty happy with them for on-road tyres.
cheers
Steve
