Importing a vehicle from USA to Ontario Canada
just thought Id post of my experience incase anyone is thinking of doing it, Ill try to siplify it. FYI I am in the Toronto area of Ontario Canada
1: find a vehicle in the u.s and a seller who is willing to jump through the hoops a bit. I find kijiji and craigslist good spots, ebay seems to be hit and miss, lots of guys put there vehicles there after not being able to sell in other spots
2: get that seller to fax/email you a copy of the certificate of title (ownership) and a "service comm" print out from appropriate dealership (nissan) stating that there are no recalls outstanding. It needs to be the print out, hand written wont work.
3: Fax a copy of both to the U.S customs side at the border you will be crossing at..make sure the border crossing deals with exports or you may have to find another crossing. I like to call and double check they got it.
4:Go get your vehicle!!!! Im not sure the options for plating the vehicle, but this time and in the past I have kept the sellers plate, and if he wanted it back I shipped it back once getting it home, never a problem at the border, they are Border Patrol, not interested in HTA infractions. I had to travel 3.5 hrs, so I rode my streetbike down, then through it in the back and drove home, only burn gas 1 way!!
5:when crossing back over stop at U.S Customs and they will stamp you certificate of title after making sure there are no leins.
6:continue over to the Canadian side advising the guy in the booth that you are bringing in a vehicle, he/she will direct you to the right spot.
7: Go to that spot, bring them all your paperwork, including the stamped certificate of title, bill of sale(dont try to lie, if you bought on ebay/kijiji/craigslist, they will pull up the add) At this point they will charge you the GST and you will fill out the FORM 1. After this you are in to the country!!!
8: Take that form 1 to the RIV (regis. of import veh.) building, there you will need to show the recall letter, the Form 1 and the bill from when you paid your GST at the border. You pay approx $200 import fee and they will give you another form so that you can get a federal inspection done. These inspections are FREE!! and are done at Canadian Tire as they have the contract.
9: Take your truck to Canadian Tire, Some things the federal inspection are looking for is day time running lights, french lables on the sun visors. You can buy a day time running light kit at canadian tire for $40 and install yourself, not too hard. The frontiers have the french already on them. 1 key point is that on the inspection it states that LIFTED TRUCKS ARE NOT ACCEPTED FOR IMPORT!!! so be careful if you buy a lifted truck, it may cause you headaches. I got my emmisions and safety done at the same time.
10: step 10 of the 10 step program is to go get it registered to you! they will want to see the form 1, the bill of sale, the proof of payment at the border (the GST), the safety and emmision test result.
So that was my experience, I am located just north of Toronto Ontario Canada and crossed at the Queenston/Lewiston bridge near Niagera Falls, once I came back across I attended the RIV office located at 405 The West Mall Street at 427/dundas area, its the only one in the Toronto area. Hope this proves helpfull to someone, if the doller is right and you find a person willing to he sell to Canada and jump through the hoops, you can save a lot!
Should also be noted that most vehicles (frontiers/tundras) are built in the U.S, so we pay no duty due to free trade.
