Dec 29 - Jan 1... need some ideas for trip destinations

I'm sure most of you guys probably have plans for New Years already, but I managed to have that weekend free somehow. Family will be out of town so i want to take advantage of the situation and do some traveling over four days. There is a Mojave Rd trip i could join, but would prefer the company of CF peeps if there's anyone around.

But i need some help figuring out where to go. Mojave desert is an option since it's winter (duh). Western sierra probably wont work due to snow. I am considering the eastern sierra, less chance of trails being closed from snow (?)... western nevada, mono lake, Alabama hills, lone pine... not sure what's accessible for that time of year.

Post up if interested.

I'm not usually cool enough to make plans for New Year's Eve.

Weather is unfortunately a factor for a lot of destinations this time of year. I don't have any specific ideas off the top of my head... Depending on what gets picked though, I might be interested in doing something that weekend. My days off are a little different though...we celebrate the New Year's holiday on Monday, so I'd be free the evening of Fri 12/30 through Mon 1/2.

The Mojave area would be a good choice at that time of year. Camping would be very cold at night but there should not be an issue with snow.

Jawbone has free camping and there are a ton of trails there and in the surrounding area including Last Chance Canyon.

31° F is perfect camping weather, just the hard part is not wanting to get out of the warm sleeping bag in the morning

I did a snow overnight trip once where it was in the teens and that got on the chilly side that night! Otherwise, I love the 20's and 30's temps <--provided you're prepared!

It was 37 deg at Shuteye Peak a few weekends ago... being prepared (firewood, hot coffee/cocoa, warm sleeping bag) makes it much more enjoyable. I might pick up one of these

Mojave Rd Trip Report

The Mojave Rd trip was a lot of fun. We ran the trail west to east. I arrived at Afton campground after 10 pm on Wed Dec 28. We ran the trail Thurs though Sun and I made it home sometime after 3 am on Mon. The trail is about 150 miles but most of it can be done in 2wd. The only tricky parts were the muddy "dry lake" crossing, some deep loose sand in the dunes, and a steep climb with a low traction surface and deep holes. I highly recommend this trip if you have never done it. Anyway on to the pics..

woke up to a bit of frost on Thurs morning

video of the Mojave River crossing at Afton Canyon:

obligatory shot under the railroad bridge

The area had gotten some rain recently and the rangers strongly recommended avoiding the Soda Lake crossing. We scouted a bit and felt the lake was passable. I was in the tail gunner position and could see the trucks in front of me fish tailing side to side, especially the Land Cruiser pulling a trailer. I wish I could have captured the thing on video. Here's the aftermath... it was very slick and sticky mud.

We spent the first night at a nice mining cabin fully stocked with supplies. They even had solar powered lights along the ground leading to the potty.

The views weren't too shabby

One of our stops on Fri was the famous Mojave mailbox. There was a little bit of weather...

Mojave Camp was where we camped Fri night.

Sunday morning view. A decent storm came through Saturday night (New Year's Eve!). We had wind and rain, but the mountains got covered in a dusting of snow.

what's this thing doing here?

scouting for a future camp site... I believe this place was called Balancing Rock.

sun about to set...

Unfortunately, the adventure had to end. I drove to the Avi Casino Resort to watch some football for a couple hours before heading home.
