Punta cabras is south of ensanada. It's is on the coast southwest of Santo tomas, and north of the town Erendria, witch is 13 miles west of the turn off at kilometer marking 78. I know Memorial day weekend sounds good but the Baja 500 is the next week on the 31st of may. That weekend you can sit at your campsite on the beach and watch Trophy trucks and Class 1 fly by at 100mph. That hole section from San Vecinte to Santo Tomas is part of the Baja 500 every year. I like it because it's white boy weekend in baja and there will be a ton of people camping in that area that weekend, not to mention contingency in ensanada on friday. I know I'll be down there the weekend of the 31st, but if you guys went some time in April I'd be down for that too.

Unhappy

Hola,

Dude, just to give you heads up stay north of the border. I had a place at K38 / Theresa's for the past 10 + years and cannot tell you how dangerous it has become down there. It broke my heart to have to say goodbye to Baja. One of my partners on the place was shot at Sept of '05 and it has gotten only worse. If you brave the odds please only drive during daylight hours. I have seen way too many horror stories first hand. The area from TJ all the way south of Ensenada is rife with hard core drug gangs that will think of nothing of doing the worst. Trust me it is not worth it. It sucks as I know many ex Pats who now have to relocate away from the Baja dream to the reality of life on the US side of the border. Don't go is the best advice.....trust me

I think don't drive at night is really good advice, along with staying on the toll roads. P.s. did the laws change? do i need a passport to get back in?

anyone make sense of this?

I am well aware of just how bad it has gotten down there. Thats why I am making sure to go in a large group and stay well south of Ensenada, and I absolutely never drive after dawn there.

I was just down there in November and had a perfectly fine trip. Punta Carbras is decent because you don't drive through TJ; as soon as you cross the border you stay to the right and head down MEX 1 all the way down past Ensenada about 45 minutes or so. You turn off onto a dirt road at a little stone bodega and the next 2 hours or so is all dirt roads and chances are you won't see another person till you hit the beach. And even than you will probably just see jorge and bandita (his dog)...he lives in the trailer on the point..has for many years and really looks out for the people that come visit him.

I will be honest though, I am a tad nervous and won't go if there is any less than 4 trucks. Additionally, I think going the weekend of the 31'st when they are running the 500 may be a slightly better gamble being there will be so many other gringo's down there. Having someone that speaks fluent or near fluent spanish is a must as well.

As of now you only need your Birth Certificate and ID through 2009. Also everyone will need to purchase Mexican insurance; and if you are still financing you will need to get written approval from your lending institution to take your truck out of the country. Otherwise your Mexican insurance is null and void. You can get the insurance and all the other info from Baja Bound

Cool about the passport. I thought it was manditory now for ground travel? Might want to double check that.

The wife and I usually go to Rocky Point twice a year for Volleyball (in April and October), and we were told we'd need them for April - which is moot anyway, because we're not going this April, haha (supposed to become an uncle in April )

Yeah, they were supposed to instate the passport thing; but decided not to till 2009. I just double checked the mexican board of tourism and baja bound to confirm.

Post up a URL for that info (provided it doesn't get censored, lol). Seriously tho, I am interested.

We are gonna get passports, but 100 bux each is pretty tight right now, lol.
