Unhappy Timing Advance Denied!?

So I took my truck into my dealer today to get my Fuel Sending Unit replaced. They didn't have the part so it goes back in next Thursday, which is BS. But, I asked my service guy about doing the Timing Advance and he said he will not do it. Apparently he has done in the past on a Titan and it ended up causing a bunch of problems on the guys truck so now he wont do it. Anybody else had this denied? It made me mad because I wanted it done and I'd rather have them do it.

Had kinda the same problem but I think it was just the tech that worked on my truck. He is the kind of guy that buys a truck or car and leaves it stock. He refused to do it but wouldn't give me a good reason as to why, just said it was a waste of time. I plan on asking for my normal tech from now on becuse he was more mod friendly.

Yeah he told me I need to take it to a performance shop to have it done. I told that I know of a lot of people that have it done (probably 60% of CF) and have no problems with it. I wasn't happy.

Sad thing about dealers, alot of the techs have no clue about anything thats not in the manual. I have worked at a few dealerships in my day and found this to be pretty amazing. Not to say that they don't know what they are doing because most of them are pretty smart ppl, however, they are the type of ppl that think "if it don't say it in the book, it won't work". I discovered this most often with the using of parts from one vehicle to another, they really hate that.

It's waranty I assume? They can VOR the part and it usually ships overnight.
It costs the dealer money in terms of obsolesense return dollars and a little freight, a minor fee for a happy customer, and you can ding them on the CSI servey if you want to which will hurt them more in the long run.

I had a chat with the tech that did mine and he told me that they just dont wont a liability on it because they will get a nail in the boot for it by Nissan if they find out, basically bad reputation for the dealer. My tech supervisor at the desk not the manager was really cool with the idea as long as u give just rewards. The one that usually has been there the longest would be ur best bet. My guy had 20 years under his belt so dont just go with anyone. I'd also just kinda talk with each of them and get there take on it, like wut they know about this and the truck.

There was a guy that had his retarded and his gas mileage rose so yeh.

I went up to the Dealer where I got my truck at (Sheehy Nissan) and I asked the service writer about the timing bump, He did not know what I was talking about so he went and got one of the "Senior Techs" well he understood what I wanted a 2degree bump but he said that I was the first person to ask for it and then he asked me what it does to help the truck and all that. Well after explaining it and even telling him how to do it with the computer he still would not do it. I am going to try another dealer tommorrow.

I'm surprised at everyone's surprise that a dealer would not want to modify the timing. I would think they have a given degree to set it at (probably with little or no tolerance). Just like they have settings and tolerances on everything else (like front end alignments); for them to set something outside those specifications would be inviting a warranty issue. How will they be able to put up any argument to not being responsible for the first burnt piston that comes back in the shop?

I'm not saying you shouldn't get your timing advanced if that's what you really want to do; I'm just saying I'm not particularly surprised that the dealer doesn't want to do it.

It is not the prerogative of dealers to make "out of spec" adjustments to vehicles that are under factory warranty. Can any of you (besides jerryp) say "Liability"?!
