Stone damage to hood....what to do?

I got a nice rock nick in the hood....down to bare metal...



This was a while back. I should have done something then, but I didn't. Now, it's starting to rust. What should I do to fix this? I don't want to have to pay to paint the whole thing, so I was thinking about taking a dremel and stripping down the paint immediately around it and grinding out the rust as well....then put a dab of silver rustoleum on. Follow that up with touch-up paint and a little clear.....

That's all I know to do aside from respraying the entire thing....anybody else got any ideas??

These work, wallyworld has them.

I got the nissan bug deflector because I had so much stone damage to the front of the hood.
Of course I've rolled it since then, but the bug deflector made it through that to.

Get one of these. Sand the rust off the spot. Get out your touch up paint. Shake it up, and dip a toothpick in it. hen just barely touch the toothpick to the scratch. The paint will naturally flow off the pick into the scratch. Keep doing this until it is built up level, or just slightly higher than the rest of the surrounding paint. Then once it's dry, if you just put it level, polish out the hood and apply your favorite wax/sealant. If you filled it higher than the surrounding paint, do a little wetsanding to level it out, then polish and seal/wax.

They did not have the sanding pen.
Advance auto looked at me like I was drunk.
And Pep Boys had nothing either....

I will make a suggestion.
But I will tell you right now.......Do this at your own risk and do NOT be in a hurry when you do this.

One of my hobbies is woodworking and pen turning.
I am starting to see some things in my shop that might work really well on my vehicles.

One thing that I found is Micro Mesh.
A couple of good online shops for picking some up is Woodcraft.....Klingspoor...and I think Wood n Whimsies has a nice pack.

Micro mesh is essentially a very fine sandpaper.
The grits go from 1500 to 12,000.
You start with a coarser grit and then work though to the finer grits.
Of course the area needs to stay wet when you are working.

I used some touch up paint that I got at an auto parts store and had the blob we all get.
I cut some very thin strips off my micro mesh and then worked ...VERY CAREFULLY...on leveling it out. I did wrap the mesh across the tip of a very thin peice of wood. This gave me the ability to work on a tighter spot.
By the time I got to the 12,000, the touch up paint looked like glass. You might want to buff the entire area out with some Meguiers polishing compound afterwards.

If you are careful..and I mean really careful not to be sanding on the regular paint, you will likely be very happy with the results.

Youi guys might have insired me to get off my butt and get to working on my door. Had a peice of metal jump up and bite my truck after I ran it over. Now got a little surface rust. The thing is I am a little nervous about having my repair look obvious. The spot is about half the size of a dime.

I couldn't find a sanding pen either....so I just used my dremel. cleaned it all off and around a bit....applied some touch-up paint. looks okay - but of course it doesn't match exactly.
