our paint sucks man my hood and fenders have that crap happening and nothing u can do about it unless u speak to ur deparment and file a complaint over the paint they use. Id use touch up paint but make sure u clean the truck very well on that are before u apply due to the fact it'll show up and yeh lol if u dont.

2007 storm grey here... about 1 year old driven year round in Michigan winters.

This weekend while waxing I noticed some very small (1mm) brown specs, mostly on my tailgate. There were probably about 30-40 of them on the tailgate. Why they were only on the tailgate, I honestly can't say. I've found maybe 3-4 tiny specs on the entire rest of the truck, but tons on the tailgate.

I hit them with my favorite bug/wax stripper (WD40)... nothing. Moved to clay... nothing. These two weapons would usually be enough for just about anything, especially on a truck that's only 1 year old.

Eventually I found that only a hard hit with a light polish (not wax, actual polish) got them out.

I've spent a pretty good amount of time detailing in my life, and have never seen this type of paint imperfection. It wasn't rust. It wasn't just odd surface dirt because the clay or WD40 would have hit those.

I suspect it to be something referred to as "rail dust" and while I don't spend a lot of time around railroad tracks, I do live in a large metro area and quite frankly my truck didn't get washed a whole lot during the winter, so it seems possible. Vulnerability depends on the paint type, and I suspect our paint is a little weak against it.

This is the best reference I could find with a quick look on google:

Industrial Fallout and Rail dust - Fallout Removal

If this is similar to what you are seeing, I recommend you get a light polish (not just wax) and try it on a spot. I didn't do the acid wash thing because it wasn't necessary in my case, but I think I caught it pretty early. The specs weren't really feelable.

If you wouldn't mind, post up what you figure out. I'm interested to see if it's the same problem.
