I would probobly bring it to someplace that does Rinoliner (or similar) and have them squirt it with their next job. (Shouldn't cost much if they do it as a side job?) This will negate the need for any prep sanding and give you a tough sound deadening finish.
FWIW, my buddy (who drank the Toyota Koolaid and got a new Taco without even considering a Frontier,) bought a TacoTunes brand sub box for his truck. These come done in a thick coat of liner and it looks cool.

Second choice would be a 2 part epoxy based paint in a semi flat.
I'm really leaning towards paint, but I've got at least 9-10 hours in this thing already. I'm itching to get it done and installed. The PDX-5 greatly improved my door speakers, that thing is worth it's weight in gold, and now with another 300 watts waiting for bass alone, I'm about giddy with anticipation. However I am, according to my lovely wife of 17 years a "damn perfectionist", so I know if I paint it it will take lots more time.

Hmmmm. . . .being lazy vs. finished right let me see . . . . . I have to look at it for however many years I have the truck so . . . . . . damn, hard decision.

As always, thanks for the input Weehooker.

Just a thought but have you maybe considered an ultra suede? will cover better than vinyl, almost like carpet. SHould withstand bumps and stains very well, should be able to match color pretty close. Pet hair and the like slide right off.

I would go with carpet personally. I need to go and check out this car audio shop near me. Have gotten carpet there before and they had like 15 different colors of it, found some that matched my last car perfectly.

how about spraying it with texture, then painting? the texture will also help hide minimal blemishes and imperfections, and the paint could still match the interior easily. heck, get the right texture and you could even match the oem plastics.

I think I will paint it, which means more sanding and more work unfortunately.

I think you are right, textured paint would help the process, or bed liner even.

And like Weehooker said, wrapping it with all those curved corners would probably be a bit of a challenge.

If you want something that will last for ever and you do not have to worry about ever again I would go with the bed liner

not necessarily textured paint.. but texture spray, like SEM 39853.. depending on how much you apply you can create several OEM dash like textures then paint it whatever color you'd like. The bedliner, would probably be tougher if that's what you're going for.
