i had mine mounted on the dash. almost everywhere that worked just fine. but there's one place, unfortunately it's on my commute and in the middle of a bunch of traffic lights where i get stuck, where i was getting poor reception. and this is in an area that has repeaters (outside DC). i temporarily mounted it out the passenger door and onto the roof and got better reception in that spot.
so it *does* make a difference, but it may not be necessary depending on where you are.

i ran my antenna through the 3rd brake light on top of the roof. keep in mind it will scratch the roof a bit. the only difficulty i had was getting an extended ratchet to grab the nuts inside the cab for the 3rd brake light disassembly.
