I would stick with the stock head unit for now instead of going through the trouble to temporarily mount an old radio. Just wait until you get a nice head unit to replace it with.

you know you don't absolutely need a wire harness to install a stereo? all you need is a wire diagram found all over the web and some time to make the necessary connections.

First, I really think it's stupid to cut the wiring harness just because you can't find the plug-and-pray harness you need. It tends to make reinstalling the factory radio rather difficult.... much more difficult than it needs to be. Plus if you swap radios like you stated, you'll have to reconnect everything again and your work space just isn't very large to start with..... So save yourself some time there..... IMHO!

Second, the 70-7552 isn't the right harness for your 2012 Frontier. You need the Metra 70-7550 if you need without RCA plugs, or the Metra 70-7551 if you need it with RCA plugs. Either harness will work, but the 70-7552 definitely won't! I am using the 70-7551 for my Kenwood DNX-6990HD because it has preamp outputs.

Oh, regarding your steering wheel controls, you won't be able to find a nice harness. My opinion is definitely go with the ASWC device. It's pretty easy to install and makes a great addition for when you get a head unit that supports it!

I hope this helps you!!

Because only having cd and radio these days is painful.. I did the same thing with a cheap head unit until I can afford a nice one just to have iPod hookup. But I have the correct harness that plugged right up to the stocker..
