First, I really think it's stupid to cut the wiring harness just because you can't find the plug-and-pray harness you need. It tends to make reinstalling the factory radio rather difficult.... much more difficult than it needs to be. Plus if you swap radios like you stated, you'll have to reconnect everything again and your work space just isn't very large to start with..... So save yourself some time there..... IMHO!
Second, the 70-7552 isn't the right harness for your 2012 Frontier. You need the
Metra 70-7550 if you need without RCA plugs, or the
Metra 70-7551 if you need it with RCA plugs. Either harness will work, but the 70-7552 definitely won't! I am using the 70-7551 for my Kenwood DNX-6990HD because it has preamp outputs.
Oh, regarding your steering wheel controls, you won't be able to find a nice harness. My opinion is definitely go with the ASWC device. It's pretty easy to install and makes a great addition for when you get a head unit that supports it!
I hope this helps you!!
