New HU

Hey all. I'll start by saying that I know jack squat about stereo systems. I've done a little research but don't really know what I'm looking at.

Anyway, I want a knew HU unit so I can get ride of my plug and play Sirius unit and have all the controls and display on the HU.

I also like the idea of a touch screen and would like an aux input.

Here is one I found that caught my eye.

Is this a good one? It says it is satellite ready so I guess that means I need something else to go with it. Also, will it fit my truck without having to modify anything? I'd like to just put it in and go. This is for an '08 SE.

Could you guys help me out? As I said, I'm lost when it comes to this stuff.

You'll have to get the wiring harness adapter and do a little bit of splicing, but everything is color coordinated so it isn't difficult at all . That is probably the most time consuming part since the one you are looking at is a double din. You'll disconnect the negative on the battery, pull the radio surround off (also easy), remove the factory radio, switch the mounting brackets to the new unit, plug in the wiring connectors, mount the new unit in, and replace the radio surround. Connect your battery and you're ready to go.

I had a JVC double din up until yesterday. It never gave me any issues and sound quality was very good. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another JVC again in the future. Check out the reviews on amazon or crutchfield to get a better idea about the pros and cons of this particular unit.

AAL, blocks, and shackles in the rear. aFe intake, foglights, and pathfinder switch covers. Still to come: xterra roofrack, kenwood sub and amp, sound deaden entire cab, 2" DIY bodylift, sliders, wheels (maybe), fire and ice light strip.

There are many to choose from.
That JVC unit looks nice, Pioneer gets a lot of love here on CF and Kenwood has some nice units.
There are also some lesser know brands floating around out there too.

Figure out how much you want to spend and what features you must have. From there I'd say just stick with name brand stuff and you'll be golden. And like TruckGal81 said, read all the reviews you can once you get it narrowed down to a few units and then make an educated decision/purchase.

Also, if you're not too car audio savvy I'd say just get one of the electronics places or a car audio shop to install it for you, although it's not hard at all to do yourself if you're willing to learn.

Thanks, guys. I'm going to take my time and do a lot a research until I decide to spend a good hunk of change. I did a little more looking around last and it seems like there are an infinite number of HUs out there!

On an aside, I took the surround off today just to see what's under there right now. It really is an easy job. However, now my airbag warning light blinks. I had to unplug all the connectors to get it away from the dash. Including the connector for the little light that tells me if the passanger airbag is on/off.

Did I FUBAR something?

I'll do some searching here but I thought I'd throw the question out there in the mean time.

Got it.

I love on-line forums!

Look into alpine. My buddy who owns a stereo shop, and does this for a living swears by alpine. The setup in his car is amazing. He has a touch screen, one of the nicest ive seen. I had an alpine head unit and loved it...if your going to spend a lot of money...pay the little extra and get the best. Might want to get a nice alarm system too, alpines are a target of theifs...happened to me. Heres there site Alpine Electronics of America, Inc.
