DIY fluid change questions ...

DIY auto service is a whole new world to me, so pardon my silly questions:

1. Where is the transfer case located and what does it do?

2. How do I drain and refill the engine coolant?

3. Is the fill plug on the rear diff in the middle of the chamber on the rear side? I thought it would be higher to allow more fluid inside ...

When it's time for these services, is there anything to stop me from doing the diff fluids, transfer case, coolant, ATF, and coolant changes myself?

I'm not afraid -- I'm proficient in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, etc. -- but I'm kind of flying blind as an auto mechanic ...

Thanks!
David

the t-case is on the back of your transmission. it directs power to the front differential/wheels. it's basically what engages your 4wheel drive. if you look under the truck, you can follow the front differential backwards.

front diff --> front driveshaft --> transfer case.

you will see it connect the the transmission back there. here is a good write up for changing the fluids (engine oil, front and rear differentials) from thenewx.org. don't worry-all the components are the same. i didnt see a write-up for the t-case, but it is the same. drain and fill.

http://www.thenewx.org/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=4320

and here are your recommended fluids/capacities for the change:

Engine Oil:
Type: 5W-30 Oil with API Certification
Capacity: 5 3/8 qt or 5.1 L

Cooling System:
Type: Genuine Nissan Long Lift Anti-freeze or equivalent
Capacity: 2 3/4 gal or 10.2L

Automatic Transmission:
Type: Genuine Nissan Matic J ATF
Capacity: 10 7/8 qt or 10.3L

Manual Transmission:
Type: Genuine Nissan Manual Transmission Fluid HQ Multi 75W-85 or API GL-4, Viscosity SAW 75W-85 or 75W-90
2WD Capacity: 4 1/4 qt or 3.98 L
4WD Capacity: 4 3/8 qt or 4.18 L

Rear Diff:
C200
Type: API GL-5 Synthetic 75W-90 Gear Oil or Equivalent
Capacity: 3 3/8 pt or 1.6L

M226
Type: API GL-5 Synthetic 75W-140 Gear Oil or Equivalent
Capacity: 4 1/4 pt or 2.01L

Transfer Case:
Type: Genuine Nissan Matic D ATF or DEXRON III or MERCON or equivalent
Capacity: 2 1/8 qt or 2.0L

Front Diff:
Type: API GL-5 SAE 80W-90 Gear Oil or Equivalent
Capacity: 1 3/4 pt or .85L

there's nothing stopping you from changing those fluids yourself if you feel capable.

For the Fronty plugs go 25 ft-lbs all around and you'll be fine.

thanks for the info! and for those who didn't know, the drain and filler plugs take a 10mm hex head to remove.

Which trucks have C200 vs. M226?

I think the C200 has the 14mm hex fill plug, right? (Drain is 10mm, BTW)
