DIY: Converting Hella 500's to HID!!!

Here is how to convert your Hella 500's (or just about any other offroad light) to HID.

Buy lights and cheap HID kit on e-bay:

Remove lens and drill a 1" hole in the back of the housing directly behind the bulb. This is needed because the HID bulb is longer than the standard bulb and it will not fit. If you use a deeper light, this step may or may not be necessary.

Pull HID harness through hole:

Put the HID bulb in, put the lens back on, hook up the wiring, mount the lights and you are DONE!

Yes, it really is that easy.

I don't have mine permanently wired or mounted yet (I am hoping the Randy Ellis light bar thread pulls through).

Here are some comparison pics, stock vs. 4300k HID:

Yes, it really is that easy.

Be careful with crappy lights, the lens and reflector still have to be high-quality if you expect good output.

The HID kit was "buy it now" $18.98 + $50 shipping, and it came overnight from China.

Shinjari, I don't think the 500's are deep enough to run most HID bulbs ( I read it somewhere, I just forgot where???) but they are cheap good quality lights. I want some 4000's because the housing is metal ( 500's are plastic)

I'm retarded I wasn't paying attention ^^^^^^^

I did mine with Hella 500's. The bulb does come very close to the lens, but it just clears. Hella 4000's would certainly be a better fit, but 500's are the least expensive QUALITY lights. There are several people on ttora.com who have converted both Hella 500's and 4000's successfully. I came across 1 thread in a google search where someone said HIDs won't fit in 500s, but it didn't sound like he had ever actually tried, and I know there are many people out there who have them converted..... they fit, its just close.
