I just removed and installed a new transmission oil pan on my 2005 Nismo 4.0L. I only changed out the pan because I only had about 2 hours to do this entire install (didn't have time to clean out the pan and scrap off the old gasket). You don't have to replace the trans pan, just give yourself some time to scrap off the old gasket as it is a pain in the a** to remove. Also, have lots of lint free rags around so you can clean all the crap out of the old pan (don't forget the magnets)!
Tools and Supplies Needed: 3/8" Torque Wrench (ft lbs), 1/4" Torque Wrench (in lbs), 1/4" Ratchet, 1/4" 4" extension, 10mm regular and 10mm deep socket (1/4" drive), 14mm regular socket (3/8" drive) or 19mm regular socket (3/8" drive), 19mm wrench, gasket scrapper, cans of brake cleaner, measure bucket in quarts, lint free rags or towels, truck ramps or jack/jack stands, wheel chocks.
This is a picture of the measure bucket I purchased from Home Depot (paint department) for $4. I did check the quart marks on the bucket, and they are pretty accurate. Home Depot SKU # 645-641
This is the fluid that I use in my truck (Castrol Transmax Import Multi-Vehicle). This fluid is a replacement for Matic D and Matic J ONLY. If your truck uses Matic S, you will need to find another source for your fluid. I purchased it through Amazon for $34.95 (6 quart box). I bought 18 quarts total so I can do a drain and refill every other motor oil change.
TIP: If you are unsure what trans fluid your truck uses, pull out the trans dip stick. It is posted on the sticker around the pull knob.
*Matic D and Matic J is a semi-synthetic fluid
*Matic S is a full synthetic fluid
When I spoke to the Nissan Tech, he said that you CAN use the current Matic S fluid in transmissions that came with both Matic D and Matic J transmission fluid. BUT, he also said that you CAN NOT put Matic D or Matic J in a transmission that originally came with Matic S.
