Diagnose / correct speedometer not working

Hi,

My son has a 99 Frontier 4wd 6cyl Auto. The speedometer quit working (also the check engine light came on at the same time). How do we diagnose the problem so that we don't buy the wrong expensive parts? How we then make the repairs?

Thanks, JenCliff

pretty sure in the states you can have a "check engine" light read for free. I'm sure someone will chime in to back me up on this. Also my old 96 hardbody had the same problem and I recall some frontiers as well. I ripped my cluster apart to have a look at it, but couldnt find anything out of place, I was told I had to replace my whole gauge cluster to fix the problem. I never bothered, I just kept erasing the code once a week.

Check engine light staying on not the problem. Without the speedo, there is a real ticket problem - and I think the cruise doesn't work either. No way to stay below the radar, so we need to fix it.

GPS could help control the speed.
Sounds like a Vehicle Sped Sensor. I would try autozone and see if they can pull the code for you and help narrow it down.

I agree with Derek on this one with the speed sensor and excellent advice on having the code checked first.

I sent my daughter with the car. This is what she said the Auto Zone guy told her
"I went to Auto zone and they tested it and said it could one of two different sensors. the code is a "knock warning" apparently from cheap gas. any how he said it depends on the oem code on the sensor when it's pulled, it's either oem #25020-85po2 ($144.99) or oem #25010-74po1 ($63.99)."

She seemed to think this was two different versions of the Vehicle Speed Sensor from what he said.

Is this any help?

may not be related at all......but the CEL is sometimes kicked on from the speedo not hooking up. i had a friend that disconnected his speedo so the odometer would not log miles travelled.

well it gave him a CEL and he was told that happened cause of the disconnect. some ecus, from what i was told, regulate fuel/air mixture through vehicle speed.

not sure if that helps or hurts your cause. good luck

I sent her back. They said that P0500 & P0325 come up.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Jencliff

I know this doesn't help you with which PN to buy from AutoZone, but it's something. I hope somebody else can chime in who has had this problem before.
