Are you out of the 12mo/12K warranty that comes with all Nissan repairs?

Just wanted to get this thread back into circulation again. Hope this does it. I hope it pops up in the 4 banger forum. Not sure on that.

here are some photos of the job...

And what your factory NGK's will look like after 140K miles....

Please don't wait this long to change them.. 100K at MOST...
I prefer to change plugs at 60K REGARDLESS of plug type...

14mm deep socket OR 9/16 deep will work..

The OP's writeup is spot on for changing them... Don't forget the two coolant lines on the underside of the throttlebody...
I plugged them off with some caps off gear oil bottles... Same for fuel line after I disconnected it(tool required!)...

Additional items needed that were not noted: Intake gaskets(4 molded rings $20) and a fuel line disconnect tool ($10)

...and while you have the intake system off, be sure to clean all the oil/carbon off the intake runners...AND clean the throttle plate with an APPROVED cleaner... especially if it's as dirty as the one in my photos!

Hope these help.

Exactly what this thread was needing.... Pics and a few more pointers on how to do this. Thanks zxxflyer. With our 4 bangers getting up there in mileage, I'm sure this info will be greatly appreciated by many. I'm going to do this sometime over the next few weeks

I do have a question. When you disconnected either the coolant or fuel line did you have to relieve the pressure on those systems first? If s,o how were you able to do this?

Thanks

Relieve coolant pressure by removing radiator cap... but then put it back on before disconnecting the coolant lines... this will keep them from pouring due to vacuum... it will give you time to plug them off without making much mess..

I never really worry about relieving fuel rail pressure... just make sure to wear safety glasses... and I wrap a rag around the fitting while disconnecting it..
It doesn't have pressure like your garden hose after shutting the spiggot off..

just a small spurt...

...and this is a good time to replace the valve cover gasket... even if it isn't leaking!

Don't expect to do this job in 20-30 minutes... even if you've done it before... Take your time and CLEAN everything....

Had the day off so I decided to tackle this project. The truck has 140,000 miles on her and I had no idea whether the plugs had ever been changed. I was not experiencing any problems with the truck, but figured it couldn't hurt to change them.

The instructions in this thread were straightforward and made the job a lot easier. The toughest part was removing the bolts from the intake. I just had trouble getting my socket in there because it is a very tight space. Also, my bolts were 12mm.

I did use the original poster's instructions which allow you not to have to remove the fuel line or coolant lines on the throttle body. It took some finesse to wiggle the intake off of the two studs, but once I did I used a bungee to keep it out of the way.

Removing and installing the spark plugs was quite simple. I used a piece of hose to start the new plug with so I would not inadvertently strip the threads with my socket. Once the plugs were in it took about 20 min to put it back together.

Also, I did buy new intake gaskets. Glad I did because the old ones were leaking. They were quite simple to install. Also cleaned out the intake runners which were quite oily and dirty.

As for my plugs, I'm still not sure if they were the originals. They are not as bad as the ones zxxflyer has pictures of, but still needed a change. Truck runs good, just like it did prior. It may have a slight amount of more pep.

Next job, change the tranny fluid.

just pull the plug wire off and used socket wrench to remove spark plug, nothing special to due,, also the double plats are what comes in it...."e-3" spark plugs are the best and will help on a little more power and fuel economy. generally spark plugs can last forever depending on your driving. i hot rod mine alot and still only replacemine ay 100K.

p.s. haynes manuals suck on info. if you can find a chiltons brand manual, they give alot more info.
