Exclamation Issues with 1999 Frontier XE. Any techs out there mind having a read at this?

Hi Group,
I've got a 1999 Nissan Frontier XE 4 cylinder. Bought it used with 33k miles on it, and it now has 205k on it. It's a 5-speed manual single cab.

Last week I noticed that when going up some hills in my neighboorhood, when I came to a stop at stopsigns, the truck would stall out and I'd have to restart it. Restarting it took several cranks to get it to start. I suspected a bad fuel filter.

Today a friend of mine helped me replace the fuel filter with a brand new one. The old one was quite clogged (I could blow through the new one, but the old one was extremely difficult to blow through).

Took the truck out for a test drive, and it was still stalling at the usual hills it would stall at before.

Got it parked in my driveway, and we noticed that at idle if you tap the gas, the truck stumbles, and occasionally stalls out. We tested this a few times, and the truck finally stalled out again and now refuses to start.

The truck cranks over normally, but won't start to save it's life now. We confirmed the fuel pump is working, we disconnected the fuel line at the filter and the pump ran fuel into a bottle for us.

We confirmed there is a spark at all 4 plugs.

We confirmed the fuses for the injectors, fuel pump, and engine equipment are all good.

The truck got a new clutch at about 135k miles.
The truck got new plugs, new cables and a new distributor cap and rotor at about 200k miles.

Does anyone know what the heck might be wrong with this thing? Any speculations?

At this point I've got a tow scheduled for 7AM to take it to the local Midas (which I trust, I know the staff there on a first-name basis and have been a customer there for years).

Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks!!

-Chris

I have a 1991 Mazda b2600i 4X4. I had a similar problem a while back. I replaced the MAF sensor.

Could it be your timing? I only think this because your distributer was replaced and the rotor may not have been lined up exactly.

Since your truck will no longer start, the bad part causing your problem could have damaged your trucks ECU. You could now have two problems.

Well for what it's worth, the fuel pump was found to be bad and was replaced, but the truck still will not start. It is still in the shop and they are stumped.

If it was a bad ECU, wouldn't I have issues connecting to it with a code scanner? I scanned the ECU and it did not return any codes.

Any further thoughts?

Chris

Find out what parts these guys want to change out, and try to find them used at a local or online salvage yard. I have had a lot of good luck with Ebay in the past. Keep your parts costs as low as possible.

stop wasting your time and money at midas and bring it to a NISSAN DEALER for a complete diagnostic done by a NISSAN expert, and not some hack who couldn't get a job at the dealer! if you think the dealer is too expensive, think about this: i have shops that can't figure out whats wrong with a car bring it to me at the dealer to fix for them almost every day. you said your fuel pump was good, but they said replace it?? how much did that run you? try an injector service or throttle body service. also, your mass air meter may be on its way out, giving you an intermitant problem that will get worse as time goes on.
