fluctuating idle / high idle problem

Just recently my 2000 automatic XE King Cab has been idling weird.

When coming to a stop at a red light, the idle stays at 1000 RPM's, then slowly drops to 650 -750 after 10 seconds or so.

The other problem is when coasting at 45 mph. The idle fluctuates between 1500 and 2000 RPM's.

I don't have any check engine lights as of yet, but I don't know what is going on with the idle. It mainly seems to be idlling higher than normal, then slowly drops back down to the normal idle.

Other than the idle problem, the engine seems to run a little less responsive than normal.

I recent replaced all the vacuum hoses, but that didn't cure the problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

I had this problem and it turned out to be the idle air control valve. I had a piece of rubber gasket stuck in it from the air filter box stuck in it. Try taking it apart and cleaning it.

My vote is with wdoyle0447 -- good advice. Your truck has the classic symptoms.

Thanks for the advise!

I tried to remove the IAC valve today, but didn't have an offset screwdriver to remove the four bolts.

I will try to clean it after borrowing the correct screwdriver.

My trucks idles at 1100 - 1200 rpm when hot in Park. When I come to a stop, the idle hangs at 1000 rpms, then slowly goes down to 750 rpm.

I completed the following maintenance, but the truck still idles high:

1. Cleaned the throttle body.

2. Removed and cleaned the Idle Air Control Valve. Installed new gasket.

3. Removed and cleaned the Idle Air Control Valve Solenoid which screws into the throttle body directly above the IACV. Replaced copper gasket.

4. Replaced 3 ft of vacuum lines all around the throttle body. They are almost 10 years old.

I'm a little frustrated because the Check Engine light is not on, so it isn't showing an error code.

My next idea was to remove and clean the EGR Valve.

I had this same problem and did exactly what you did and still had no results. After purchasing a brand new IACV it took care of it. You can get an IACV from Autozone for about $160, a much better price than $240 from the dealership. I would bet when you put a brand new IACV in it will eliminate the problem.

I appreciate the help!

Recently, the local Pick-N-Pull got a 99 Frontier in. Since I didn't have my offset screwdriver to remove the IACV, I only took the IAC Solenoid.

The Solenoid didn't fix the problem after I installed it.

I have to go back with the right tools and get the IACV. It's only $6.00, so it's worth the gamble.

Problem solved: IACV was bad. I replaced it with a used one for $6.00.

Excellent -- good news. Ya can't beat $6 for that part!
