Hello 4-banger lounge forum! My '01 Frontier XE - now passed on to my son - has a sagging driver's door and the only 'fix-it' information I have access to is an Alldata DIY subscription, which isn't terribly helpful regarding such stuff.
SO, the question are: do I need to remove the fender to adjust door?
If so, does anyone have a good diagram + instructions in how to do that? And, if I don't need to remove the fender, can anyone provide a diagram and list of instructions on how to adjust hinges w/fender in place?
Thanks in advance - I typically get good, accurate responses from here!!
It's pretty common on Nissans. I have shimmed a few 4th gen Maximas and my 03 Altima without removing the fender. I believe you could too. Get some fender shims (somewhat like a U shaped washer) and loosen the lower door hinge (at the door) and slip them in.
There are replacement bushing and pin kits available as well which might be a better idea if yours are worn too much.
At the body shop they would take a length of wood and a roll around floor jack and use them to lift up on the door when it was open. Use the 4x4 to protect the bottom inside edge from damage. This would take the sag out at the pillar. It didn't take much to adjust the door so it would close again. Don't over adjust it - just a little at a time and keep checking how it closes.
If the bushings are worn that is an easy route, try that first.
However, I've also fixed several cars with a floor jack and a 2x4. Just barely crack the door open from the jamb, give it a little boost, and observe striker plate alignment.
I appreciate people that notice these things.
