Yet another Rear Bumper Build

So after some time pondering whether I wanted to buy a rear bumper from ShrockWorks or Hefty FabWorks, I decided I didn’t want to wait. So I decided that I would design and build it myself with help from my dad. After all, I have all the tools to design and engineer one… plus my dad is a certified weld and has all his own equipment. The plan is to have a good looking plate bumper that uses all factory mounting locations and also an integrated receiver hitch and safety chain mounts. I also plan on hiding the 7 pin trailer plug behind the license plate. The bumper will be fabricated from 3/16-in thick steel plate. While the mounting brackets will be fabricated from ¼-in steel plate and the D-rings are made from ½-in steel plate. All pieces will be CNC plasma cut; in addition, I will have the top, front and bottom pieces will also formed via CNC brake press.

So once I finished with the CAD model I decided to make a full scale foam board model and use it to mock it up on my truck. Once I finished all the finite detail it was off to fabrication!

The first picture shows most of the pieces all tacked up. As you can tell the OEM receiver is still attached to the truck along with with the 7-pin plug.

The next picture shows the OEM license plate lights mounted and the receiver welded into place.

After all the fabrication and assembly was finished I took it over to powder coating, and roughly 10 days later went to pick it up. I pulled off the OEM bumper and receiver... mounted up the new rear bumper and plugged in the 7-pin harness and license plate lights and called it a day. Thanks for looking!!

Thanks man!

Now taking order!! My dad is has been retired from his real job (40 year working for a national laboratory) for a month, so he has time to do this kind of stuff. Doing subsequent rear bumpers will be easier. We are planning on doing one for this Ford super duty next.

As I said my dads retired and we have the tools, so I'm not talking mass production but make them as customers request them. We had a blast doing it, plus it was a good father/son project. I'll PM you tonight. Regards
