I have a 02 frontier and I don't know enough about nissan's to know if this is a problem or normal. I have owned jeeps before.

Symtom:
2 WD there is no problem.
4 WD on some smooth road there is a rumbling or vibration from the front wheel mainly from the drivers side. Feels like you are on rumble strips.
2 WD with hubs still locked in has the same rumbling at 15 or more mph.

Is this normal or a problem with the hubs?

If i stop and put it in reverse and unlock the hubs it goes away.

I appreciate any help or input.

You answered your own question, you have to back up to get the hubs to unlock. If you roll your window down you can hear each one click to unlocked. Ive had one not unlock and do just what your saying. Just back up five or ten feet and your good. Helps get the tcase out of 4wd also.
