Zoysia Grass Lawn

So my wife comes home with an advertisement for Zoysia Grass. Supposedly its drought and frost resistant. It also grows so dense that it blocks out weeds. Finally, it also claims to be bug resistant. Does anyone have any experience with this stuff? It sounds too good to be true to me. The pricing is pretty inexpensive but then again your buyin grass and not the fun kind either. Let me know if you or anyone you know has had experience with this grass.

Here is the website from their ad. Zoysia Farm Nurseries: Welcome!

I think my parents have some of this in their yard. I have never taken care of it or paid attention to it too much, but I don't recall ever seeing weeds come up in it. I can't comment on the bugs. It is however very thick/ plush and it gets brown in the winter up here.

Yeah my grandfather, who lived in a suburb of Chicago, planted that stuff everywhere. He loved it. It was slow growing and fast spreading and rarely needed water. It definetly blocks out the weeds. The downside is that it greens up later than most other lawn grasses, only stays green for about 4-5 months, and usually browns up before any other grasses. In drought situations it tends to brown up rather quickly. Also it feels like straw and can be sharp at times, even when it its green. It is thick and dark green and lokks great when it is green.

Thats funny. It's an easy to take care of grass because you don't need to do anything to it. My Aunt and Uncle had it at their old house. It's kind of ugly because most of the time it looks like it is dead.

My whole yard is Zoysia and I absolutely LOVE it!!! I built my flower beds then laid the Zoysia down myself when I had my house built and I'd highly recommend it although those advertising claims you posted are overexaggerated. Don't mess with seed, save yourself some trouble and just get the Sod. Everyone here has Burmuda so Zoysia is the only grass I could think of that won't get choked out. It does VERY well, it's thick like carpet, very pretty, and only needs to be mowed twice per month. This is an old pic of mine almost 1-week after it was last mowed. Oh, and yes it doesn't get as many weeds because of its thickness but it does still get a few here and there in the low spots.

Thanks pops it does look good. How does it do in extra wet weather say during an abnormally rainy season like we are having here this year. It seems to be raining every 3 days or so.

It does wonderful in the rain. September is usually the beginning of our rain season in the fall which is when that pic was taken. To be honest, it's a little yellow in that pic compared to normal but keep in mind that most my neighbors' yards were almost brown at that time. It just dawned on me that I have no idea what region you're in and it is a little particular to regions so here's the map with a link to a site that has some good information. The only thing I've glanced over that I disagree with is using seed because Zoy grows too slow to wait on the seeds IMO.

A guide for the care and growing of Zoysiagrass - Establishing Zoysia lawns from grass seed.

Talking

Ok Here Is The Deal. It Depends On What Part Of The Country You Are In ? And All The Hype About It Is Drought Tolerant Is Not True, And It Tends To Get A Disease Called "brown Patch" In The Southern "high Humidity " Climates, And Is Not Insect Resistant Either, No Grass Is! It Is Not A Wirey Grass It Is Actually Soft To The Touch Because It Has Tiny Little Hairs On The Leaf. This Is Why It Gets Brown Patch As The Tiny Little Hairs Hold Water Droplets On Them And Creates A Moist Host For The Disease. With This All Being Said. I Live In Oklahoma And Have A Zoysia Grass Lawn And Would Not Have Any Other Grass. As Long As You Do Proper Cultural Practices Ie. Mowing, Water, Fertilizing And Weed Control, It Should Be Fine. This Is Just My 2 Cents. I Have Been In The Lawn Care Industry For Over 10 Years, And I Am Currently The Branch Manager For Trugreen Chemlawn. Pm Me With Any Questions Or Concerns I Would Love To Help!

Pops! That Is A Great Lookin Lawn Bro, Keep Up The Great Work!
