US push for drink detectors in cars

Matthew Wald, Washington
November 21, 2006

ALCOHOL detectors may be fitted to all vehicles in the US after private and government experts agreed that the deterrence tactic used against drink-drivers for the past 20 years was no longer working.
In the first phase, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, backed by a national association of highway officials and car manufacturers, plans to campaign to change drink-driving laws in 49 states to require that even first offenders be forced to install a device that tests drivers and disables the car if it detects alcohol.
Many states already require that people convicted several times use the devices.
New Mexico, the first state to force first-time offenders to use them, saw a 12 per cent drop in alcohol-related fatalities last year. "It is an integral part of our success," said New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, who thinks other states should follow suit.
The next step would be a program to develop new devices that would unobtrusively test any driver for alcohol, and disable the car to thwart drunk driving.
Saab and a medical equipment firm have devices that might be adapted for that job.
About 13,000 Americans will die this year in car crashes involving a drunk driver. "We've seen no progress in 10 years; we're completely stalled," said Susan Ferguson, a highway safety researcher at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
She said the most promising new technologies would work automatically.
"We don't want the soccer mum dropping kids off, going to the grocery store and the preschool, and having to blow into something every time," Ms Ferguson said.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving chief executive Chuck Hurley said that corporate fleets might be the first to use automatic sensors.
Eventually, insurance companies might give discounts on coverage to drivers who installed the devices, he said.
Two companies have recently introduced products that hint at future strategies. Saab, which is owned by General Motors, is testing in Sweden a breathalyser attached to a key chain that prevents a car from starting if it senses too much alcohol.
A New Mexico company, TruTouch Technologies, is modifying a technique developed for measuring blood chemistry in diabetics and using it to measure alcohol instead. The appliance shines a light through the skin on the forearm and analyses what bounces back.

The car owner has to pay for the installation from what i know about the current ones. It's hard to have any empathy for drunk drivers but tired drivers are dangerous too.

Nothing yet; but they're easy to spot... They have "CHEVROLET" on the back of their vehicles.

HEY NOW my first two vehicles were chevys.

#1 1989 Corsica 2.0L 4-Cyl (kept it until 1999 with 145,000mi)
#2 1997 Lumina sedan 3.1L 6-Cyl (kept until 2001 when I went MARINE)

I have nothing but good things to say about those vehicles. I used to tow my sea-doos with that Lumina.
