hire a small person or young child to patrol the perimeter of your house and stomp on every ant they encounter

Summer, they might be looking for water.

If you are in a flooded area maybe they are looking for high ground.

There are way more of them than us, and they got here first!

I hear ants don't like cinnamon. I think it's just a myth, but that's what I hear.

Cinnamon is what I was gonna say. Odd thing, one of my coworkers was talking about that today. He saw it on the DIY network and after looking through the internet other people claim it works too. Even if it doesn't work at least your house will smell delicious.

Just go to Home Depot or Lowes and get a bottle of Diazinon(I think its spelled like that) Comes in a green bottle with a yellow cap. Looks like milk, and doesnt smell terrible. It says use a tablespoon per gallon of water, I use a good pour and fill the sprayer with water, shake real well and spray any nest, around the entire foundation and three feet up all exterior walls(doesnt stain paint or siding), bring inside and spray around all baseboards. Any smell will go away within minutes. It kills any bug, and has a residual effect for up to 3 months. Best stuff on the market for years.

Well first things first, you have to find out where they are coming from. Once you do that, if they are inside, you might want to start taking off drywall. Get them before they spread too far. As a carpenter, I had to deal with them once. Luckily we were demo-ing so it wasn't too big of a deal. but holy crap! The ants had a nest starting in the floor, going all the way up the wall, and into the ceiling.
I imagine it is very easy for them to travel around your house, they would just use the wiring/plumbing as pathways.

I would call a professional and get them to come take a look(like an estimate)

I had a fire ant invasion in my house in 1995. I was sitting on my couch one evening and felt something stick my back a couple of times. It took me a minute to realize that fire ants were crawling behind me and looking for something to snack on.

I ended up buying a bunch of ant baits and spraying them. It took a couple of weeks to get them out of the house and they haven't been back yet. They were mostly in the kitchen area. I ended up removing outlet covers because they were behind the walls.

I get ALLOT of ants, (even carpenter type) since I live in the sticks with lots of shade/shrubs around the house. The best solution I've come up with ( after 15 years of reserch/battling) is to make my own bait from Borax. Borax is a notoriously good ant poison and very cheap to buy.
You can get some from your local hardware, farm store etc. ( Comes in a powder form in a small bottle.) Mix equal parts each maple syrup, suger, water & Borax and dribble it (or fill bottle caps) in places that they travel through. Aints GOBBLE this stuff up and take it right to the colony. Usually within 2 days they are all dead/gone. Works better than any commercial solution I've tried ( minus $300 exterminator visit.)

yes this a very bad year for ants..i mean us, i wasted some money on that bait that looks like sawdust...yeh they bring back to the colony, feed the queen and laugh their a$$es off. so now i spray twice a week, it took 3 weeks before the war was finally a draw. $hit i can't wait for their next offensive.
