Red face

The beds on a short bed truck is so short and the tail gate close to the cab that the air doesn't seem to bother much, just goes right over the roof.

I bet you got better mileage in the city because the Frontier tailgate weighs so much.
You did mean this statement as a joke, right?

Thank you Discovery channel for this one...

Mith Busters did a episode on this... The thing is, when they make the truck, they take in account the tailgate being up... If you could actually place your truck in a wind tunnel, you would see that the wind actually goes up over your truck cab, and comes down behind the truck, leaving very little movement in the actually bed. If you have the tailgate down, the wind actually comes down right on top of the tailgate, making it actually create more drag.

When i first purchased my truck, i tried trips both way's, and to be honest, they are right... better with tailgate up... the didn't, and neither did I, test it without the tailgate... However I don't see how it would help, If the tailgate is off, its just like it being on as far as drag is concerned... You may loose a little weight, however not enough to make a huge differance, plus it looks like ****... The best way is a hard tonnue cover... soft ones work too..... but the hard shell ones are the best for gaining milage...

So... Keep it on, and Up...

Call it a day and put a cover on the bed, at least it doesn't have to be made every AM. Trucks get bad MPG to begin with, we all have to deal with it. Even with a cover (I don't know about a cap) there is still a down force decreacing MPG. We all got into this together!!! LOL

Why is a hard cover better? Im having a hard time understanding this. Soft covers deflect the wind just the same and they weigh much less.

Yeah, clue us in on that theory.
