I just bought a Yamaha home stereo system and the subwoofer is great for movies, but not so great with music...I was thinking of replacing with a better sub, but I dont know if I can use a vehicle subwoofer or are there subwoofers specifically for home stereos?
It is an 8" woofer and the specs are below:
Output power: 50W
Dynamic Power: 100W 5 Ω
Input Impedance: 12 kΩ
what is the model number?
might be better off just geting a powered sub and adding it to the system.

but i dont think that will fix what your wanting it to do. be better to get a larger sub and more power

Thanks Brandon. I think Im just going to get a 12 and build a nice box for it...Its hidden behind a lounge chair anyways so you cant see it...We are then going to wire it up and run it on the same wires that was running the sub that came with it...1 12 should be plenty.
Check out Velodyne.
They have been around since the early 80's.
Velodyne basically pioneered the idea of having a dedicated speaker (subwoofer) to reproduce a specific range of frequencies (bass and more bass).
I have a 10" powered sub from them that has an active 10" and a passive 10" speaker in one box.
I can't remember the model number right now but it's probably about 12 years old and it's the cat's a$$.
It's only 150 watts but is responsible for many a broken decorations falling off the wall or shelves near by.
It took my wife a while but she now knows that nothing fragile can be hung or placed on either wall adjacent to the subwoofer (I run mine in the corner, which is usually the ideal location).
I don't usually play much music on my main surround system so the Velodyne sub is used 90% of the time for home theater duties.
They are a little pricey but worth every cent imo. I think mine was just over $500 with tax, but they have more entry level (budget friendly) ones too.
Check this: http://www.amazon.com/Velodyne-Impac...9676659&sr=8-1 (and read the reviews).
By the way I run all Yamaha equipment, Polk speakers and the Velodyne sub on my home theater set-up.
I can't recommend Velodyne enough.
If you have a local stereo store that carries Velodyne, do yourself a favor and go listen in person, you will not be disappointed.
Anytime you place the sub in a corner, it is going to amplify it reproduction of sound in a room. A good idea for trying to find the right place is to put the sub in your seating position and then crawl around on the floor til you find the spot where the sub sounds best, then you place the sub in that spot and it mirrors the reproduction for where you sit. But placing it in a corner will "generally" make and 8in sound like a 10in and so on.
Another great manufacturer is Klipsch. You should be able to buy a KSW-10 for around 150 used and they will absolutely hammer, not quite as well as a Velodyne models with a passive radiator, but much more so than your standard run of the mill bose, polk, infinity, sony, etc. If your theater room is bigger than 15x20, I would bump up to a KSW-12. If you want insane bass, try to find a KSW-15. I auditioned one in my current carpeted room and it was placed about 7 feet away from my equipment tower. It hit so hard it was making the CD and DVD payer skip.
