i'm not THAT bored!!! i've got some fam guy to catch up on... i do know that most of the basic sax's are about the same in quality. alot of how a sax sounds depends on how good the reed is that your son will be using. when you do get one, try to find a way to test out several different reeds to see which sounds the best. oh and the mouthpiece itself has alot to do with it as well depending on how much air he can get into it and at what speed... (think they make a CAI for those things???)

Honestly, you will be better off going to a reputable band store in your area, or ordering new online. Not a sam ash, but a genuine marching band type store. They will be able to set you up with a good quality deal.

The problem with ebay is that saxes and other wind instruments can appear to be in good condition, but it is relatively easy to get one that is out of maintenance and adjustments. These things are pretty touchy.

Also, trying to learn to play on a broken down sax will seriously hamper your child, and probably make them want to quit.

Yamaha makes quality stuff, but I don't really know any sax brands. Here is an excellent research site http://www.wwbw.com/CustomerService/...axophones.aspx. This is a very reputable company, and I had great service with them when I purchased my $3,000 flute.

I was a music major in college for about a year, but gave up. Too bad, I was pretty good.

Good luck, and buy some earplugs too. Those first months are torture. If you really want the kiddo to succeed, get a private instructor to get em on his feet, and show him the right ideas to begin with. And practice is really important too.....

eh if it's that cheap "new" there's something wrong with it, lol. i'd say your best bet is to shop around and find a well taken care of used one preferably that's been gone over by a professional with new springs and pads if possible, not only will it sound better, it will last longer and may become a prized possesion...
