Failed my Motorcycle Skills Test Today

I did my motorcycle skills test today which consisted of doing u-turns and slalom around some pylons. My nerves got the better of me, and I stalled the bike twice and put my foot down twice. The first time I've ever failed something!! Hope I can pull it off next time. It's not a skill problem - I can do it just fine when I'm not being judged. Has anyone else failed their skills test?

Dont worry man, You'll past next time. Practice makes pefect. Have you consider taking the motorcyle classes. When you graduate from the class they give you a certificate in liue of the taking the skill test at the DMV. Plus it gives you insurance discount.

I have been riding for 20 years and never gotten my license yet. But, I just bought a new bike to commute on; I have been procrastinating on taking the riding portion of the test. I am sure now that you know what to expect that you will do just fine next time.

I too recommend a Motorcycle Safety Foundation Rider Course. You get a lot of practice doing the skills, and at least in my class, the instructor was pretty lenient on grading the skills test (probably more so than a trooper at the DMV would be). There was one guy who had no business being on a bike, but the instructor threw him a bone and gave him the bare minimum score to pass (he also gave him a pretty stern lecture as well).

I passed the test without a problem and got the waiver so I didn't have to do the skills test at the DMV. I'm sure I would've been stressing out if I had to do the skills test for a trooper.

What type of bike did you test on?

Heres a tip that can be a huge help for beginners. When doing slow speed maneuvers like U turns or figure 8's, drag the rear brake a little. This lets you rev the rpm's while slipping the clutch, making the bike more stable via the gyroscopic effect of the engine. It will also decrease your chances of stalling.

Before I took the test, I got a "learner's" which I didn't understand as the requirement was that someone with a license was within 25' of me while I was riding (not on the same bike even?!?). The learner's was a 30 day deal, and by the end of 30 days, with the knowledge of what was on the test (I had asked about the course when I got the permit, the actual test was less traumatic. I spent a lot of time riding and getting used to the bike I was going to test with, as well as going to the DMV and practicing the course after hours. Just be patient with yourself, and comfortable with the bike you test with. I passed on a 750 Virago.

Stay safe and upright!
