Cash from gift cards in California?

I've been researching with mixed answers and I'm still not sure of the answer. In California can I get cash from my gift card? Meaning since I'm not going to use it, can I get whatever the amount is in cash? If so, How do I do this?

If anyone has a website that clearly states the answer, please post it. I've had a hard time finding a site with the correct information.

You cannot sell it back to the company its for. If you do sell it to private party unless they are your friends you will lose on your end. Lets say you have a $50.00 card for something. If you want cash you would need to sell it for $35-40.00.

in california, you can get money back with a receipt for the same form of payment (ie, cash back if it was bought with cash, returned to the credit card if it was paid with one, etc.). if the gift card was a result of a returned item (like a credit issued), then you're out of luck. hope this info helps.

Yea ive always just bought and returned the item.if the card is 50 buy something 55 then minus 50 and add 5 cash. that way when u return you will get all 50 back. since if u buy 48 u will loose 3 dollars
