Any feedback good, bad, or indifferent on the Ruger Mini-14? I would be purchasing new, I know they went through a retooling circa 2005 to improve accuracy and reliability. Probably looking at the ranch rifle with stainless barrel and synthetic stock. And I don't need to be steered to an AR-15, that's on the shopping list too.

In all seriousness - An AR is just so much more versatile. Slap in a .22lr conversion kit, and you've got a fun, cheap-to-feed plinker. Mate a 6.8 SPC or 6.5 Grendel upper with your existing lower, and you've several other superb calibers. Hell, get a .50 BMG upper for it!
After you've got the AR angle covered, THEN you can consider indulging in the Ruger - but don't put the cart before the horse.
ETA: And a Happy Thanksgiving to you, too!

The Following User Says Thank You to Skibane For This Useful Post:
I have an older Mini-14.. It's a fun gun to shoot, but not all that accurate. However, I have read good reviews on the new models. That said.. I would go with an AR as there are much more accessories, parts are cheaper, and they are both close in price point.
I do have to say.. with the price of ammo.. it's getting expensive to shoot .223. If you're just looking for something fun to shoot I'd go with one of HK's rim fire offerings.

With conversion kits cheap and readily available, why would you even consider giving up .223 in order to shoot .22lr?
Changing from one caliber to the other takes all of about 30 seconds - Easy as removing the AR bolt carrier and sliding the conversion in its place.

As others have stated, Id go with an AR first if I were in your shoes. Even an AK if you want to shoot fullsize for cheap.. ammo is getting sparse now for many calibers though. The AR is far more versatile, and would serve you better I think and the customization options are near limitless. A friend of mine recently traded an AR for a Mini-14(older model), and after the luster wore off(around the 3 month mark) he was kicking himself for trading a far more versatile weapon for a Mini-14, to each his own though, he is trying currently to trade back up to an AR.
If you must have a Mini-14, Id say you cant go wrong with them, my friend's is awesome, and he loves it, but its not comparable to an AR, or AK for that matter. You cant go wrong with a Ruger in my opinion, I own 2 and LOVE them, excellent value.
If you are somehow swayed to buy an AK, dont get a cheap one, such as a Saiga. Go for a Molot or an Arsenal. I know a few people that I have shot with with a Saiga, and they SUCKKKKKKKK compared to an Arsenal or Molot. Russia and the US(Arsenal) still make quality AK's. Such good quality in fact I can hit the same 1/2" groups with an AK as my Sig Sauer 516 @ 100 yds.
My next gun will be the Ruger mini-14 target model. All the reviews say its an incredible gun. At $650 otd you'd be hard pressed to find an AR as accurate for the same price. I personally dont have any interest in modifying an AR, I already have a 22 long rifle and pistol for plinking.

My brother inlaw, and his friend, just bought 2 of these over the summer. They've been shooting a lot of 223 rounds out of them, and so far, love them. These guys are hunting/gun enthusiasts, not novices with their first gun. I haven't used it yet to compare to my Windham, but for the price they paid (about 700$) it sounds like a great deal for a piece to start customizing.
