I do computers for a living, and I concur with several other members here:
1. Malwarebytes
2. Avast
AVG is decent but I've seen it let things through it shouldn't have. I've had to clear off the 'Anti-Virus 2009' malware on 3 different friend's PCs that had AVG installed on it, and AVG let it through. Avast is more effective at stopping bad stuff (spyware, virus) before it gets a chance to muck up your system. You'll have to register with them with a valid email address but they don't spam me or anything.
Malwarebytes is very comprehensive about clearing off malware, which seems to be the biggest thing going around these days. I used to swear by programs like Hijackthis, Spybot, and Ad-Aware. I would have to install all 3 because one program could clear off a particular problem the other programs couldn't. Malwarebytes has replaced all three of those for me.
The last variant of Anti-Virus 2009 I dealt with went so far as to lock down the task manager and prevent any new installs. I had to download an alternate stand alone task manager program so I could end task on it and install Malwarebytes. My friends browsing habits never cease to amaze me.
2 other programs I recommend:
1. CCleaner (nice comprehensive temp file and registry cleaner)
2. Mydefrag (formerly known as jkdefrag, works much better than Windows, read their website on how to use it effectively)
