Dan, youll need a bolted down vise to the floor, bench something that wont move. On the front when they say proper crush on the sleeve for pinion preload may be UPTO 500' pounds, they meen it. Thats a big breaker bar with cheater pipe to get up there. The change in gearing will accel the truck like you added a extra 40-50hp which is about 20hp shy of actual hp from a Eaton

3.36's have been OK thus far for me, but I'm on 33's and no aftermarket support for the rear R230, so I'm SOL, you guy's are lucky with a lot of support. I thought the Maxima community was crappy, boy was I wrong.
It's only been for about the past year that we've had gearing options available. Aftermarket support for the 2nd gen Frontiers has been a little sluggish.
HighALT, I think 4.56's were a good call. Did you see this post on TNX (or the blog on Rugged Rocks)?

I was wondering if the change in gear ratios would have an approximate "HP equivalent". It seems like a lot more of a cost efficient way to gain power than a super charger. I know weight reduction is the best way to go faster but that's just not happening with this truck... so much more weight to add. That's what ultimately cemented my decision to go 4.56.
BRUTAL - Do you have any other recommendations for making bigger power on these engines, other than super charging? Other than standard bolt-ons, of course. I've been trying to research the engine and the only thing that comes up is 350z folks swapping vq40's in... and they all seem to being going N/A, so no help there.

Yeah, I read that blog about a dozen times. When I talked to Steve, he said it was partly out of date. He's figured out some more good news. Before ordering, just tell him what you have and he'll tell you what you need. There's some exceptions that may help you save money, he'll be sure to let you know.

Yeah... I don't know about the automatic with 33's. Then again, automatics are a lot different to drive than manuals. When I drive my girlfriends Maxima I don't even feel like I'm driving. It feels reaaally weird. I'm jealous of how easy it is to crawl over stuff with an auto though. I've heard that 4.56 is deep enough that if I let off the clutch without giving any gas the idle RPM is enough to start crawling without stalling. Used to work in 4-lo on a flat road with 33's... but not an incline or 4-hi.

^^^ Well wait till you get your gears in and see how much you like that. But I know how mods go, not done with one and thinking of the next. I still get in friends fairly stock Frontiers and am amazed how quiet and SLOOOW they are
There no secret potion out there for power, the best bangs for the buck are always the big $$$ items. But they yield the best results. Look for used as I have, Ive gotten both blowers used and that saves alot when you start at less than half the cost of new
