Want a better sounding muffler--i searched!

Hey guys,

I am looking for a muffler that sounds better, nothing severe, but just a low hum rather than the stock nothing sound.

I am going to run stock pipes I just want to know how to choose the ins and outs....i dont know the size of the stock pipes.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

I have a 07 le cc lb.

Thanks,
Mike

Your gonna get lots of advice and suggestions, but your not truly gonna figure it out until you hear different setups in person. Typically the largest case mufflers will produce a quieter sound. I am leaning toward a 70 series flow master myself but can't find anyone running that setup. There is a thread on here for that setup but no pics or videos posted yet. Good Luck!

Actually, I just had one installed yesterday. I went with the Flowmaster 70 series, the dual 2.25" intakes, one 3" out. I had them remove the factory Y-pipe altogether, and run each pipe separately to its own intake on the muffler. It's part number 524703 if you want to look it up.

I am still testing it out, but so far, I really like it. It has a nice growl when you get on the throttle, but otherwise, it's not much louder than stock. From 4K to the redline, the engine feels a lot more responsive, a huge difference from the stock cat-back setup. At higher RPMs, you can really tell how restrictive the factory muffler really is.

Cruising at 70-80 mph, there was no drone at all. There was some light rumble, but it disappeared if you have the radio on. I can make it drone with brisk acceleration from about 2200 to 3200 rpm, but it goes away once load is taken off of the throttle. I'm curious to see what effect this has on gas mileage. I'll have to get back to you on that.

Overall, I really like this setup. Some guys on here have gone with 40 and 50 series Flowmasters, but with a lot more drone in the cab. The 70 series really seems to have that solved. If you're looking for very loud, then the 70 series if probably not for you. But for correcting the restrictive nature of the stock exhaust, it's a fine choice.

I have a 2012 CC with the 4.0 V6 engine. The pipe sizes are 2.25" before the stock muffler, with 2.5" from the muffler and on out the back. I was able to use the stock pipes to right before the Y-pipe, but I was not able to use any of the stock 2.5" pipe. So they ran all new 3" pipe from the Flowmaster, routing the same as the factory exit pipe.

Yes, I know. You want pics of this. It's midweek and I don't have time to get up under the truck. But I will put the truck up on ramps and have a photo session for you guys so you can see how I did it. It will probably be this weekend, but I will get it done. While I'm at it, are there any pics in particular you would like?

Seilmo, the other thread author, had headers and the single in, single out 70s series. He also really likes the 70 since it seems to address the drone issue that's present in the 40 and 50 series. His posts are from last year, so it would be awesome if he came back and told us how his system is holding up.

Goody, do you still have the dual in/dual out setup? If so, do you like it any better than you did? I remember you didn't care for it very much when you had it installed. In fact, I was originally considering the same setup you have, running the pipes out of the back as duals. After I read your posts, I decided to go with the 3" single out.

Nope, dont even have that truck anymore. Have a 2012 now, and considering the 70 Series single in/out w/ y pipe replacement/modification.
I have read some threads where they stated the drone is caused by the rear muffler hanger, and making like a small rubber gromet (sp) type thing has helped as well.

The 70 series dual in/dual out is too much muffler for this truck...as in not enough pressure/air going through it and the ONLY time it sounded good was at ignition. After that it sounded like pure ***.

to me i have tried 2 different mufflers on my truck before i was satisfied, i had a magnaflow, dual 2.25" in 3" out i was a little much for me i also think it was a little much muffler for the frontier something better would end up being a dual 2.25" in 2.5" out to match the stock muffler. the one i had had the drones horribly and it had to go. i ended up swapping it out for a stock titan muffler dual in single out, it sounds great to me its not obnoxious it sounds tuned it has a nice rumble at idle and at full throttle it sounds great as well, and the low end torque is amazing. it all depends on what you are looking for. anything is better than the stock "Y" pipe section, so no matter what you decide will be an improvement over stock.

The drone and in cab resonance comes from vibration of the overaxle pipe attached to the side rear passenger frame rail. Losing it and dumping out the muffler with a turn down loses all the resonance. Sound much better without the resonance and is quieter. Stock pipe before y is 2.0". The aftermarket 2.25" probably slides over it instead of butting flush with it. I have the Magnaflow 15580 kit which is dual 2.25" in with 3" out. The muffler is a straight through design with internal stamped "Y" inside the very rearward of the mufler. I also have empty stock "B" pipes with the turn down tip. This setup proved to be quieter than stock with kit 15580. All the resonance as I said is caused by the rear most hanger to the frame rail. With empty b pipes, Magnaflow 15580 with turndown tip off muffler, afe intake and hypertech 87 octane setting - the powerband begins at 3000 rpms noticeably instead of 4000. Made a huge difference over stock and my mpg went up 1.5.

Okay, I had a chance to get under the truck with the camera. This is my Flowmaster 70 two intake/one 3" output.
