But I am not allowed to have a Cold Air Intake..... I can only use a K&n Drop in ...but if that isnt really goin to make a difference then I will tick with the Fram Filters.

Why stick with just intake options? Consider the other things I mentioned. Why aren't you allowed to have a cold air intake?

Ditched the K&N for a Volant

I finally got sick of trying to fix my K&N CAI so I switched to a Volant. The K&N mounted to a stock bracket that was meant to hold a ground wire – really poor design. The bracket broke and now the whole thing flops around. K&N claimed I was the first person to have this problem even though MUSTARD brought his truck to them and they made him a different bracket.
I wrote to them and sent them the link to this message board so they could see I was not the only one with the problem, but never really got anywhere.

I like the Volant a lot better. The truck seems to have more low end pep now between 1500 and 3000 RPM’s. and the upper RPM’s seems the same as the K&N. The best thing is the power curve seems much smother through the whole range.... no stubbles or lagging, much more drivable. The only thing I don’t like is around 3100 or so it sounds like the box is vibrating. I thought I had a loose screw or something but everything is tight. Guess it’s a resonant vibrating frequency or something. The K&N sounded awesome at 4000+ RPM, but I’m much happier with the Volant. Wish I didn’t waste my money on the K&N.. oh well live and learn.

Fujita, also makes a great intake for our trucks. They claim 15 hp and 13ft-lbs and run $360 shipped from To The Limit Motorsportz.

just installed Volant

Just got back from a test drive after installing my Volant CAI.

I can definitely feel the low end, better throttle response, and wide open she sounds great. As far as saving gas, it aint gonna happen over the next few weeks I can guarantee that.

The install was a pain. I am a noob when it comes to sh*t like this. The mounting holes were drilled off, so my stubborn a$$ was trying to fit the square peg in the round hole three different ways for a good half hour. Got annoyed and just got out my trusty dremel and made the hole a wee bit bigger.

Question on the horn. I dont have one right now. I couldnt bend it enough to get it to fit. Anyone got any ideas or can you shot me a pic to show me what you did.

And now what the heck do I do with that old intake?

thanks!
BT

Instead of the drop in K/N I'd go with a AEM drop in. K/N are oiled and I'm not sure if I dig oil in my intake.

K&N filters have been used for YEARS with minimal issues. I'm willing to bet all the oil on MAF wires stems from people who used too much oil when they cleaned and re-oiled their filters. I myself have used K&N filters for 9 years on 3 cars and never once had an issue.

The amount of oil that gets into your intake from the filter is very small. Any actual build up in your intake manifold is from the PCV or recirculation tubes, not the filter.

That being said, I have the AEM intake with the oil-less filter. Not because I was worried about the K&N, just because that's what the intake came with.

The Volant won't fit with the horns in the stock location. I just unbolted the bracket that holds the horns, unbolted the horns from the bracket and re positioned them just behind the headlight. It's kinda like a puzzle but if you move them around just right they will wedge in there and stay put. Then the Volant air box will fit in nicely. The horn issue may have something to do with some of the complaints about the holes not linning up right for the air box. If you get the horns out of the way and pull the air box over so the rubber grommet seals tight against the fender opening all the holes line up just fine. Good luck.
