My attempt at a light cage...

Today I threw together a light cage for my Hella 500s. They had previously just been mounted to the factory cross bar.
The cage is 1/2 tall but I didnt feel like cutting it down today. I will cut it next week.
I wanted to build it so that it folded down when not being used and this works perfectly for that. I was originally going to replace the long tubes from the factory rack with steel... But found that the tube is actually 2.25od not 2.0 inch, so that wouldnt work. A piece of 2 inch tube fits extremely tight inside the factory tube and that was used to give me something to bolt the cage to. I didnt want to just be bolting it to the aluminum.
The nuts that are welded in to the bottom tube of the cage are locking, so I dont feel that I need to have a rear brace to keep it in place. It really isnt going to come un-done unless I remove it.
So, what do you think? And remember, I know its 1/2 inch too tall!!!

That's nice that it folds. Good work.

It looks nice. I like the fact that it can fold back when not in use.

Quick question thou, what happens if the two bolts become loose when you are offroad and it then causes the assembly to either fall forward or backwards? Any thoughts about adding some kind of triangular crossbrace to help prevent this?

I dont know that I made myself clear... Inside the factory Frontier tube is a 12in piece of 2in OD tube. The bolts that you see go through the mounting plate, through the factory tube, through the steel tube and end with nuts attached on the inside.
If anything at all was going to fail, it would be the plastic factory feet. I am trying to find a way to have a rear brace that would be able to move from the up to the down position. I cant find any decent pics of a folding light cage, and I just cant figure it out.
I will try to find a way to do it before next weekend when I cut this one back apart.

I understood your original post fine, well on the second run thru I did. The two bolts I was refering to were used as the pivot points, one on each side. I assume it would be a pain to have to stop and tighten them up all the time. IDK what type of link system would be needed so that it could move with light assembly. I am sure you will figure something out and it will look awesome.

Side Note: Any word on the guys who tried to jack your light last week?

Probably a piece of flat stock on each side with 2 notches and a hole in the end would work. The first notch would go over the hinge bolt for the folded position. The second notch would be farther up the flat stock so it could catch a bolt near the top of the light cage in the upright position. The hole would bolt the flat stock to the roof rack behind the light cage.
You could even have a notch back by the pivot bolt so when you folded the lights down the top bolt would lock the cage down
look something like this. that's a quick sketch and the spacing is not to scale, just an idea.

nice job! I like the folding action. I can't tell from the pics, but is the wiring harness getting pinched when the bar is folded? if so you might want to re-route it.

Even if the cage is laid completely flat, there is clearance for the wiring.
I am going to shorten it tonight and I have a couple other ideas for stabilizers...
Should have some new pics tomorrow.
