I've had my Smittybilt for 1.5 years and have used it probably 10 times. Most recently was on Thanksgiving day. My in-laws had a huge oak tree come partially down onto another tree. We ran the winch cable to it to pull it over after using the chainsaw to cut the tree it had fallen on. I stalled out the winch (XRC8 ) 3 or 4 times before it we finally cut the bottom tree enough to topple the whole thing. It did it's job and the bumper held!

I did have the original solenoid lock in the "In" position on me a couple months ago and had to be quick with the battery cables to prevent it from pulling all the way in and grenading itself. They sent me a new control box/cables no questions asked. I relocated it from behind the bumper to up under the hood to prevent water from messing it up again.

Besides being WAY over kill for your truck (unless it's routinely buried to the doors in mud), make sure the overall dimensions would fit the bumper. Most winch bumpers for our trucks don't recommend anything over 9.5 but that's mostly for the "hidden" mount bumpers. It might fit on the Cal Mini as it's mounted externally but also might have clearance issues with your grill. Nearly all winches use the same mounting bolt pattern so check the difference in overall dimensions (between the 12.5 and the 9.5) as a better indicator of whether it'll fit

I know it is overkill but for the same price Its hard to pass 12,500 vs 8,000 line pull. & it is the same motor in the 9.5 & 12.5 just different gear ratios, I am going to wait till the bumper comes in & measure myself. I have it down to the warn m8000, super winch 12.5 or smittybilt amphibious model. I am still a little bitter about the first smittybilt rusting so it is probably a 2 dog race. Probably a weird thing to say driving foreign truck but I kind of want to give the money to the Americany company(warn) vs Chinese (everything but warn). But I feel it is not a fair comparison 8,000 vs 12,5000. Still doing research

you wont be dissapointed with the Warn M8000... thats what i use on my jeep, and it has gotten me out of places where i dont think a Frontier would ever go without some major modifications... its a bit on the slow side, but it has lots of power... if theres no need for 12,500, why use that one.... most probably its heavier (im guessing heavier cable gauge), maybe bigger (less air flow if installed infront of radiator), and, waaay overkill for what you need it....

a friend of mine got stuck once (pic attached)... it took 2 Smittybilts and my M8000 to take him out.... first we broke the rear bumper, then we hooked him by the chassis, and after about 2 hours of digging, we recovered him... one of the smittybilts broke, and my Warn is still going strong...

for light use i would go the smittybilt route (half price of a M8000), but for peace of mind, Warn is the only way to go... im removing mine before selling the jeep, and installing it on my next truck, probably a Frontier...

I am waiting for the bumper to come in so I can measure. From the company's website I don't think any of the super winch will fit. I am leaning towards the warn. I will keep everybody posted.

Now that thing is stuck. Nice work.

Although I too like the Warn, the price is ridiculous for them. Don't pay that much if you can get the same thing for a lot cheaper.

This is the one I have, but not installed yet in my Shrock bumper:
Engo ES-9000S 9000lb Winch (Synthetic Rope) : The JeepHut - Your 4wd Experts, Jeep Parts, Accessories, and Gifts

And here's the 9000lb for even cheaper for non-synthetic rope:
E9000 9,000 lb. 12 Volt Electric Winch

Winch ready to be installed

I ended up getting the Warn M8000. I was helping a buddy of mine get his F150 out of some nasty mud with my wrangler & my smittybilt xrc8 controller broke & right then I decided to maybe pay more but get the higher quality. I only used the xrc8 4 times and it was a rust bucket.
