I wasn't under the impression that all filters had them either. I was just looking at K&N's Website and found this on a oil filter diagram (pointing of course to an anti-drain back valve):

Anti-drainback valve (where applicable) eliminates dry starts, prevents oil from draining

I infer from the "where applicable" description that some filters (maybe those installed for a vertically, bottom-down installation) don't require an anti-drainback feature. Of course, anyone selling a filter for my truck should have the ADBV designed in since the installation is horizontal. But if it's a really cheap, poorly designed filter, who knows.

At any rate, I'm glad your rattle is gone and I hope the solution is permanant (or at least good for the next 300k).
